I would say 1912, 1976, 2000 were the most exciting

In my subjective opinion, 2008 takes the nod.

In modern times, 92 or 68.

From the ones I've actually followed, 2008.

My favorite is 1940.

Also interesting: 1876, 1912, 1948, 1968, 1976

I'd say 1864. Had Uncle Abe lost, the US would likely have been divided.

I've only been able to follow 3 elections because of my age -- 2008, 2012, and 2016.

I would call 2008 the most exciting, despite the foregone conclusion (i.e. Obama victory). There was a war in Iraq, energy crisis, financial crisis, ridiculously unpopular incumbent, former POW, unorthodox VP pick (i.e. Palin), first black President with a Muslim name etc. So many subplots.

Indeed, turnout that year was one of the highest.

My favorite is 1948, Truman v. Dewey

1912, 1960, 1976, and 2008 were all very exciting and interesting.

I'd have to say 2000. Nobody had a clue what was going to happen and the electoral map was being colored in real time instead of just pro forma. 1960 was a close second.

1948. Without any question. Followed by 1968, 1912, 2008 and 2016.

Gotta go with 1932. That massive voter swing towards the Democrats and the Republicans being swept out of office and into the unemployment line was pretty lulz worthy.

The elections of 1860-1876 were by far the most interesting, and arguably the most important.

2000 was nuts.  As of 2 AM EST that night, Florida, Oregon, Iowa, Wisconsin, were still uncalled.

1968 - Don't see how anyone couldn't put this as one of their choices. Incumbent president challenged by the candidate of the hippies who then runs him close in New Hampshire. Incumbent president then drops out and the brother of the previous president enters. A civil rights leader (who is arguably the greatest American ever) is assassinated, then the brother of the previous president is assassinated just after giving his victory speech on the night of the California primary. Riots then take place at the Democratic convention.

Meanwhile, the Republican race is turned upside down due to an idiotic gaffe by the frontrunner. It turns out to be a contest between the NY governor, a bad actor-turned-CA governor and a former vice president who narrowly lost eight years prior.

Then you have a segregationist governor running a strong third-party campaign.

Peace talks collapse just days before the election, which turns out to be a nailbiter.

1896 - Jeez, no one has mentioned this? WJB ran perhaps the most high energy campaign in American history and gave perhaps the greatest ever speech at a political party convention. Also the election was a major turning point.

Actually New Mexico was called, but probably shouldn't have been, given how tight the margin was.

2000 was about the last election with a decent number of close states.

I'm very partial to the elections with strong third-parties. 1860, 1912, 1948, 1968, 1992.

The 1976 election got exciting pretty late in the game. The current one is on its way to an exciting climax

As I've said before there are a number of elections that were epic to live through but aren't as interesting to study in hindsight, and vice versa for that matter. 2004 was one where both sides were at their most passionate and there was a real feeling of historic importance to it (more than just the usual BS "THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION OF OUR LIFETIMES!!!111!), yet in hindsight it doesn't seem like that. The most notable thing about it is that it appears to have been the last gasp of the Religious Right. 2000 is the opposite; at the time it was (as has been pointed out) viewed as dull and neither candidates were seen as being transformational, yet in hindsight it's fascinating for the legal battles and for being the election of one of the most controversial presidents in history.

This election is exciting in a complete train-wreck kind of way. You just can't look away.

For real, complete excitement was that 1998 gubernatorial race in Minnesota.  Only time I felt calling people out to vote on election day mattered.
