Ha. I have been lucky, but my travel has been mostly for work, or when it's not, then it's extremely cheap last-minute deals to random places or else uses the points earned from my work travel.

I know it's not this year, but as long as I was messing around with the Great Circle Mapper, I plotted my peak travel year of 2015, when I flew through 31 airports on more than 100 flights.

2017:

(KGL is the one near EBB that's not visible on this Northern Hemisphere map.)

43 flights through 23 airports for a total of 76,950 miles flown (by plane, not including helicopters) this year and every continent except South America (the one I've spent the most time in outside North America).

Here is the map of the jaunt to Samoa. To there, Albany to Midway Airport in Chicago, then to Las Vegas, then to John Wayne airport in Orange County, CA. And then the next day a drive to LAX in Los Angeles, to Fiji, and then Samoa. Return is back through Fiji, to LAX, then Denver, and then Albany. With layovers, each way took about 24 hours, plus the hour's drive from Hudson to the Albany Airport each way. Ugh!

Wow, Torie, that's a serious journey. All of that was on one ticket, or did you have to get some segments separately? The SNA-LAX transfer sounds like the worst part. Tongue

Hope you're not one of those complaining about climate change... just saying, LOL.

I know, guilty as charged, and I'm just getting started with my restless wandering this year. :/

Been taking advantage of the cheap TAP business class fares? They used to be only cheap when originating from Europe, but it's great to have such a good value transatlantic option from the US now, too. The A330neos and A321XLRs are both great, and the food/drink is way better than on US airlines. (granted, very low bar)

But Lisbon airport kinda sucks and their European business class is pretty bad compared to BA or Lufthansa, but you get what you pay for I guess.

Oh just normal TAP economy for me. It was the only itinerary that would allow me to get to Split to meet my friend's sailing yacht and then depart from Dubrovnik once we made the journey down the coast. We splurged on food and beverage on the boat (and on land) rather than on the flight.

I wasn't impressed with the Lisbon airport either. There was no coffee available before 0700.

Very bumpy landing in Vegas thanks to the wind.

I don't mean this as a criticism of Nevada lest Joe Republic flog me again (we will continue to disagree on that general topic), but the vast majority of the time I've flown into Vegas, it's been a wild landing. Takeoff seems ok. I'd say probably 95% of the landings were notably bumpy. I suppose something about the geographic conditions with the mountains? When I was riding on Colombian Air Force planes back in the day, even their landings on dirt runways in the desert or the jungle were smoother on average than LAS. Or it might just have been the time of day -- I almost always was on 1 of 2 flights from the East Coast.

It was about 1:30-2 PM when I landed, for reference. Take off was fine. I’ve only been to Vegas’s airport once before and I was 6, so I don’t really remember that flight.

From looking at pilot fora, it seems as though this is an effect known as "the bubble" at LAS -- because the Las Vegas Valley is hotter than surrounding areas because of the development-related heat island, combined with the mountains ringing most of it, there is a localized meteorological effect that makes descending turbulent but doesn't really affect ascent.

Planes are aerodynamically dirtier (slats, gear, flaps, etc) and slower on approach than climb, so they'll have more exposure to thermal turbulence.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation, Santander!

With 11 flights through 9 airports and 11,061 miles, it's rare that I've done more flying than you nearly halfway through the year.

Map

Nice projection Wink

I know! I've been pretty sedentary this year and/or taken trains rather than flying. Will be flying to the BVI in November and possibly Provincetown/Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket in September, but otherwise no additional plans to fly at the moment. O_o

My only future ticketed flight is to Iceland in Aug. I'm thinking that should fit well on the projection.

On the land side I hope you are still planning on Hampton in July.

Lovely! Happy to share my unsolicited tips on Iceland.

And yes, planning to be in Hampton! Will be an exhibitor at the ALPCA portion of the festivities.

Nice... true explorer. Is this trip planned, or did you already go?

Just got back recently. Was an amazing trip! Was visiting a relative who after living up there for 23 years was threatening to move back to Montreal. Turns out she is staying for a bit, so I'll probably try to pop back up next year, perhaps at a different time of year.

One trip, but it was a mess:

BDL -> ORD -> ALO -> ORD -> CLT -> BDL

Couldn’t escape if you wanted to?
