Sad state of affairs when striking down racial gerrymandering is considered a "win" for Democrats. Shows how depraved Republicans are.

Worth noting that this was a purely procedural decision based on standing, so we don't actually know what the Court's view on the substance of the issue is. This also explains that the vote doesn't completely fall across the usual ideological lines.

Posted this in the C&L forum, but will do so here too.

Gov. DeSantis of Florida signed SB-7066 on Friday, making felons have to pay court fees and other costs to get their voting rights restored. Blatant disregard of the 2018 popular vote.

Despicable! Florida does something right for once and then the Governor disregards it. Does he want to maintain his state's status as the nation's most depressing punchline?

Of course you would say that. Republicans know very well now that they cannot win free and fair elections in this country nationally. They need everything to help them and obstacles to the other side. Your side needs the Electoral College to even have a chance at the Presidency, a hideously disproportionate Senate to maintain control, and extreme partisan gerrymandering to win the House. That's not even including all the ways Republicans make it harder to vote. Without any of that, the Republican Party would have been relegated to permanent minority status lest it be actually forced to change beyond its far-right, anti-science, nihilistic ways.

Potentially big development in Florida regarding voting rights:

MIAMI OFFICIALS: MOST PEOPLE WHO OWE FINES AND FEES CAN VOTE
Lawyers and advocates in Miami-Dade County will roll out a new plan to counter the disenfranchisement of people with felony convictions.
Quote
Carlos Martinez, the elected public defender in Miami-Dade, said he estimates that financial obligations are not listed on the sentencing documents for 90 percent of people with outstanding fines and fees in the county.

“People were looking at the high number and amount of fees, fines, and costs that are assessed in Florida, and they were thinking that every person that wants their rights restored has to pay their fees, fines, and costs,” Martinez said. “And the reality is that if they’re not in the four corners of the sentence document, they don’t have to be paid for completion of the sentence. Individuals are still required to pay fines, fees, and costs because there is a court order, but the requirement of such payment is not part of the completion of sentence definition that the legislature created in the statute.

Looks like redistricting in Arizona could play out differently this time around:

Of f***ing course. At least it signifies that the Arizona GOP seems to be privy to how their state has been trending. They're scared.

Election Day Voter Registration Clears California Legislature

https://www.courthousenews.com/election-day-voter-registration-clears-california-legislature/

Quote
California would become the 12th state to allow same-day voter registration at polling places on election day after the Legislature passed a bill Wednesday that heads to the governor’s desk.

California previously passed a law in 2012 that lets voters register on Election Day but only at a limited number of county election offices and satellite locations, sometimes resulting in long lines late into the night.

SB 72, introduced by state Sen. Thomas Umberg (D-Santa Ana), would make same-day registration available at every polling place in the state. If approved by the governor, it would take effect in 2020.

Quote
A mere 15% of the state’s 25.2 million eligible voters live in a county with more than one location offering election day registration, according to California chapters of the ACLU and League of Women Voters.

In 2018, voters in Los Angeles and Orange Counties waited in lines up to four hours late into the night to register to vote at county election offices on Election Day.

Umberg said this bill will ease the burden on voters who missed a registration deadline but still want to participate in democracy.

This is great news obviously, but it should go without saying that this provision should have been included in the original SDR bill from 2012. What did they think was going to happen by only allowing same day registration at county offices - often only one location per county? This is what Michigan Republicans did to try and blunt Prop 3 - they restricted SDR to county clerk's offices only, severely limiting the ability of citizens to make use of the service.

Any version of same day voter registration that doesn't allow registration at polling places is not even a half measure. It's like a 1/5th measure. It's just not enough, especially for a state like California, where the poor results in urban centers would be very predictable.

A controversial Florida law stops some former felons from voting. A judge just blocked part of it.

A federal judge has issued a limited ruling that Florida cannot use a person’s inability to pay fines as a reason to deny the vote.

In what way is it a "limited" ruling? Wasn't this the whole point of the law? Huh

Its application is limited to just the specific plaintiffs in this case:

Quote
The ruling on Friday specifically applies to the 17 plaintiffs listed in the consolidated suit and means that the state cannot use the fact that those 17 plaintiffs cannot repay fines and fees as a reason to deny them the vote. The groups representing the plaintiffs argue that the ruling also deals a heavy blow to the entire law and indicates that the measure is likely to be struck down in federal court after a trial next year.

Huh, that is odd. If the legal rationale that led to this ruling can be applied to other cases, you'd think the ruling would as well.

So North Carolina has a new congressional map? Surprised that hasn't been brought up here.

Virginia Democrats planning on scrapping mandatory photo voter ID. Would also allow employee and student ID cards, utility bills and other forms of identification to be used.

Personally I would be in favor of zero ID requirements, but this is a good start.

Other proposals include:

- No excuse early voting (starting the second Saturday before an election, beginning in 2020)
- Allow 16-year-olds to preregister to vote
- A pilot Election Day voter registration program
- A constitutional amendment that establishes that the only qualifications to vote in Virginia are U.S. citizenship, being at least 18 years old and being registered

Spreadsheet of voting rights lawsuits filed or supported by Priorities USA. Dem-aligned groups on seriously flooding the country with lawsuits to reverse voting restrictions ahead of 2020:
