Following the 2023 Gaza War, the Benjamin Netanyahu government became plagued by infighting and questions over Israel's lack of preparation for the war. The Amit Commission appointed to investigate the war in its aftermath accused Netanyahu of "direct responsibility", saying about his actions prior to the war:
"He decided unwisely, lacking common sense and care, to ignore repeated Egyptian and American intelligence warnings of Hamas' determination to strike inside Israel in favour of playing down the emanating threat from Gaza to focus on the protection of settlement expansion in the West Bank."
His coalition initially began to collapse on 12 January 2024, with the resignation of Education Minister Yoav Kisch from the cabinet to publicly protest Netanyahu's refusal to take responsibility for the strategic miscalculations leading-up to the surprise Hamas ambush. On 28 April 2024, centrist National Unity party leader & war cabinet member Benny Gantz announced that Kisch, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and nine other Likud MKs (including Nir Barkat, Israel Katz, and Yuli Edelstein) were defecting to join National Unity, and that the party had come to agreements with Shas and UTJ to eject Netanyahu and Likud allies along with the Religious Zionism, Otzma Yehudit, & Noam parties from government in favour of Yesh Atid, Yisrael Beiteinu, and Labor, with Gantz officially succeeding Netanyahu as Prime Minister on 3 June 2024.
