Hurt. Trump could have made the case that he is a new kind of pro-LGBT Republican, picking Pence throws away that olive branch to younger voters.

Not to mention, all positions on the issues aside, Pence is a milquetoast goober. No one outside of DC is excited about this.

And he would have lost a large part (or the single largest part) of his base -- the religious.

lol, it seems Trump was forced into taking Pence as late as last night.  I think even Trump knows this is a bad pick

Those believing in a higher power only care about the next life. Better they hurry up and die as Trump helps people who actually matter.

Pence isn't that Homophobic. in fact he's more of an inactive homophobe like Christie or Pope Francis, not an active homophobe like Huckabee.

Given that he signed that ridiculous bill, I'd say he's definitely active homophobe, just in a different style from someone like Huckabee.

He also supported moving AIDS funding to gay conversion therapy.

Did he really ?
That would be bad for him (and trump) .... really bad !
Can you post a link regarding this.

16 Years ago. That was back before straight camps were largely discredited, support for homosexual rights was a fringe issue, and HIV/AIDS wasn't quite a universal disease in the eyes of many yet.

It is pretty rare for a pick to actually hurt the nominee. Pence will not help as much as others could have (Kasich, Rice, Rubio) but he will help a bit. He fills out the ticket for the socons and has some experience. He isn't as risky as Gingrich or Christie.  So in the end it is a small help.

Pence will definitely help, because he is
  (1) a governor with solid executive experience;
  (2) a traditional conservative who understands the grassroots of the GOP;
  (3) someone who is able to speak well for the evangelical constituency;

I don't expect significant change, in part due to the fact that he's relatively unexciting and in part due to the recent chaos in Turkey and France. Perhaps a slight bump, or slightly more of one than he might be receiving otherwise.

The reason he probably chose Pence - they saw a poll that came out that had Christie and Gingrich both with massive unfavorable ratings.
