Let's say Cruz wins Indiana, Trump decides he's gotten bored and won enough publicity already, and randomly drops out. Cruz becomes presumptive nominee, and everything else happens the same as in reality (besides the stuff about Trump, obviously.)

I think he would be doing better than Donald and would not have inspired the mass defection among the establishment, but he would not be polling as well as Generic R.

Ted Cruz is a real, constitutional conservative. I wouldn't have even an ounce of reservation about supporting him.

Hot take: he wouldn't be doing better than Donald. He doesn't have the "he tells it like it is" card that contrasts with Clinton. It would be Crooked Hillary vs Lyin Ted

He'd be doing slightly better, but he'd probably have less hope of winning, since although his floor would be much higher, his ceiling would be lower.

Not too well, probably worse or the same as Trump.

He'd be doing horribly...he has the most annoying sounding voice I've ever heard.    Who could stand to listen to speeches that guy makes?

Cruz would be about as far behind in the polls as Trump is right now.

Worse than Trump.  No chance in swing states.  Would lose North Carolina and Georgia.  Smashed in debates.

Unlike Trump, Cruz ran a campaign with significant manpower, organization, and infrastructure. It was the reason he performed so well in caucuses.

It's possible that Cruz might have been better suited for the general than Trump is.

Of course, Cruz still lost the primaries to Trump, who ran a lean campaign (and is still working with that leanness); so I have some doubts about this conjecture.

For the 100th time, primaries =/= general.

He would be trailing in the polls by high single digits.

The polls would be steadier with Cruz trailing 4-6. No 10-12 point losses in polls. Utah wouldn't be up for discussion, but Penn probably wouldn't be either.
