What kind of person who lives in the Midwest or West would vote for Carter in 1980, then Reagan in 1984?

Republican who was still pissed about Watergate (i.e., voted Carter in '76 and stuck with him) or just one of a lot of swing voters?

Western/Midwestern evangelicals.

Besides that, they're probably white, male, and got a job in the boom shortly after the 1976 caused by Ford but generally thought of as caused by Carter.

A moderate liberal living in the Northeast who voted less enthusiastically for Carter in 80 due to partisan lean but voted Reagan in 84 because the economy was doing well and Mondale was uninspiring.

See the title. I'm looking for someone from the Midwest or West.

Many people forget that outside the south, Reagan lost more counties in '84 than he did in '80, particularly out west. Of course, very few states were in play to begin with.

Born in 1954 or later. Carter/Reagan tied 44/44 in '80 in this age group; in '84 Reagan beat Mondale 60-40 in this age group. And probably white and male, and not Jewish.

A western liberal Democratic partisan who held their nose to vote for Carter's re-election, but grew displeased with Carter's religious conservatism and moderate economic policies, so switches to the GOP because Reagan represented an anti-establishment voice and a change from the status quo. There is a parallel today: Trump voters who voted for the liberal policies of Obama in 2008 and 2012, but then became displeased with his willingness to cut Social Security, and his ramping up of military intervention abroad, so vote for Trump who is a Republican and an outsider.

A Democrat pleasantly surprised by Reagan not starting WWIII and that the economy had improved, maybe seeing a personal increase in standard of living.

Reagan won by 10 points in 1980 and 18 points in 1984 so there must have been a lot of these voters

Someone who was concerned Reagan lacked credentials in 1980 but felt things were going well in 1984.

A person who is economically liberal but who had a religious epiphany sometime between 1981 and 1984 which caused him or her to become a member of the Religious Right.
