People who are as turned off by Republican economic orthodoxy as they are by the unprecedented levels of identity politics and pandering by the Democratic Party this election. These people were willing to give Obama four more years, but now they see a country that is just about as divided as it has ever been in their lifetime and they feel that the Democratic Party no longer cares about people like them. Others may feel that Obama is more worried about being politically correct than protecting America from terrorism.

You can't make a serious claim that closeted racists backed Obama in '12 and are going to back Trump in '16 - there may have been such people who voted for Obama in '08, but surely they would have jumped ship in '12. It's very simple - people vote for people who they think care about people like them.

A white male union Democrat, probably racist and xenophobic, fearful of free trade and immigrants taking jobs from Americans.  Quite possibly a former George Wallace '68 voter.
So racist that they voted for a half-black man for President twice against two of the whitest men you'll ever find?

most of the wallace voters were southern democrat conservatives who joined the republicans because of the republicans racial politics.  they have been voting republican for a very long time
I hate the GOP, but the idea that the racists suddenly jumped ship from the Democrats to the Republicans after the Civil Rights Act and Wallace's campaign is completely untrue.
