No, Trump is far more liberal than W if we take it on a conventional, issue-by-issue basis.

What matters far more to the GOP today is kicking @ss as opposed to specific policy positions.  A high-energy Jeb Bush (lol) could easily have blasted Donald Trump despite having very different positions.

Keep in mind that W has a very high favorability rating among registered Republicans.

Which is where the GOP has gone through the looking glass. "What matters isn't what you say but how loud and angry you yell it" has to be about the world's most unconvincing argument ever.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

I realize you are just using the fiscally conservative/socially conservative meme, but for some reason it really bugs me when people use the word "economically liberal" in that way. This is economic liberalism, which is almost the opposite of how many people seem to use the term.

Don't worry, when it's used that way unironically it bugs me too.

Probably

I mean f[ink]ing Rubio was considered to liberal by the GOP base just because he held a center-right (and not a far-right) stance on immigration, despite being on the far-right on every single issue (especially abortion).

Bush would probably be considered as too liberal by today's GOP (especially on immigration).
