He's leaving politics immediately for family reasons, namely his ugly separation. First opposition leader never to contest a GE. Assume Cloutier or Hivon the favourite.

Possible candidates: Cloutier, Hivon, Drainville, Lisée, Aussant. I'd pick Cloutier or Hivon.

Hivon apparently isn't interested.

Gaudreault or Maltais are possible interim leaders.

When Boisclair was leader, never did I imagine he would be outdone in hilarious incompetence. Dunno what the timeline will be, but my guess is the executive won't set rules till after the sitting ends in June.

Duceppe confirms he's out.

Drainville considering either interim or permanent. Given their funding state, executive is considering a delegated convention rather than extended OMOV race.

Hivon considering.

Cause he flopped last time he tried? Fond memories of those 24 hours.  Aussant is considering and Hivon is expected to run.

Marceau might run.

Berube won't run but wants the convention this year. Executive will decide Friday night.

Cloutier is running, Drainville isn't, race should be quick.

Strong possibility that Hivon's candidacy would mean a 2-person race.

Hivon is getting some caucus support already, but Cloutier hopes she won't run so he'll be acclaimed either de jure or de facto. Ouellet unsure but thinks Hivon won't run (Hivon's decision will influence hers). So all eyes on Hivon. A lot of MNAs want a September or October convention.

Lisee is considering.

Cloutier and Hivon met to discuss the situation. Looks like Gaudreault has the interim leadership locked up.

Duceppe essentially endorses Cloutier. Cloutier is running no matter what, and sounds like Hivon's getting in.

Cloutier has minimal caucus support, Aussant out.

Support spin wars already starting. Hivon claims 12 caucus supporters.

Leger has a complete crapshoot which includes 2 non-candidates.
This'll be our first truly competitive leadership race since 1961.

Cloutier says he's in, formal announcement later.

Gaudreault elected interim.

Landry endorses Cloutier.

Hivon will announce tomorrow.

Cloutier will be in very soon.

Cloutier's self-assurance, bordering on arrogance, irritates some of his colleagues.

Cloutier jumping in Thursday.

If you want someone less identitarian, then both Cloutier and Hivon fit that bill.

Long Lisée Gazette interview, interesting as always. Martine Ouellet will announce in a week. Whether Cloutier or Hivon win, they could do worse than having Lisée as their strategic guru - better role for him than leader IMO.

Cloutier: referendum plank depends on sufficient mobilization. If he's a kangaroo, then Ouellet's a caribou.

Vote will be Oct. 5-7.

$20k filing fee, 1500 signatures.

In practice of course, no referenda for the foreseeable future. PQ's structural problems are far more immediate, but I don't think any contender has a workable solution for that. IMO, no one on either side has had that sort of political skill since Bourassa.

MacPherson on Lisée, who again might have trouble qualifying.
