If Cruz is serious about picking a VP nominee before the California primary to appeal to California, would Jerry Sanders be perfect? Lived his whole life in LA and San Diego, worked his way up from being an ordinary cop in San Diego to Chief of Police, left that to become a successful businessman, turned around the local Red Cross chapter, and was a popular two-term mayor of San Diego. Seems to tick every box Cruz might need in the primary without hurting his general election chances in any meaningful way.

Maybe the last name Sanders could confuse some of the more stupid Bernie supporters into supporting Cruz/Sanders!!

CA is closed and almost all of the remaining contests are also closed, so that seems unlikely.  Might help in IN, though?

I meant in November

Don't most ballots use full names rather than simply last names?

Isn't he pro-SSM and pro-gun control?

He's pro-SSM, but I don't know about the extent to which that's a disqualifying thing in a GOP primary nowadays (trump and Kasich both are too, right, or at least have tried to have it both ways?). Sanders is basically a squishy moderate on gun control; he spoke at a pro-background check rally after Sandy Hook, but after San Bernardino he gave an interview where he basically said legislation wasn't the answer (http://www.kpbs.org/news/2015/dec/03/jerry-sanders-san-diego-mayor-police-chief-killing/); a spokesman then walked it back. Mixed record there.

I think "former long-time cop" would make up for "squishy on gun control", myself.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing at all that he could be a good VP pick for a Republican candidate, I just don't think that Republican candidate is Cruz because Cruz doesn't strike me as the 'ideologically balanced ticket' type.

Problem is I think Jerry Sanders seems like one of those Republicans who would absolutely hate Cruz's guts.

So, in other words, most Republicans?

well, yes, but Sanders is a cop and a former SWAT team commander. Also, fairly moderate overall. A mix that seems very #NeverCruz just as much as it is #NeverTrump.
