Part of the reason the Republicans have schemed to prevent Donald Trump from reaching the minimum number of delegates to win outright nomination is so the powerful faction can yield some sort of a control over a candidate they feel they generally cannot control.

The Republicans can blow up the party by screwing over primaries voters who have given Donald Trump more states and delegates than every other candidate.

The Republican can also not screw over their primaries voters by backing Donald Trump for nomination should Trump be willing to select for his vice-presidential running mate a candidate who the establishment would like.
