If it's Cruz vs. Kasich, expect them to talk about Trump the way they normally talk about Clinton.

Presidential candidates of course don't generally win on "detailed plans"; they win on slogans, soundbites and image. Reagan's "Morning in America", Obama's "Hope and Change" etc.

And insofar as that's true for a segment of Republican voters, "Trump's a chicken who's scared of Megyn Kelly" will be more damaging than his absence highlighting his lack of serious intellectual chops.

Good decision. The last few debates have added precisely nothing to the race.

Because Trump doesn't allow anyone else to speak (instead just interrupting every candidate all the time); and he turns the whole thing into a barrage of insults and BIG statements with zero substance behind them, never once offering any kind of actual plan as to how he would get anything done.

I found the opposite.

Rubio interrupted the most, and they were really annoying interruptions.

Cruz and Trump could hold out, especially Cruz.

Trump was generally happy to wait.

Trump got ambushed by Kelly and Rubio over Trump University, and he subqequently showed his University was not rated D. He was quite irate about that and labelled Fox all sorts of names.

Trump knows that the debate moderators will show clips of him contradicting himself followed by questions about his honesty.

Then Megyn Kelly will proudly show him the "All women hate you" ad to prove a point.

Trump is not up for that.

Cruz and Kasich should debate anyway, spending all their time talking about Trump.  After each answer, Megyn Kelly should say "Thank you for your answer.  Mr. Trump, your name was mentioned, so you have 30 seconds to respond."  Then the camera pans over to an empty podium, and we get 30 seconds of pure silence while everyone stares at the empty podium.

LOL! Why do you hate TRUMP so much?

Bad move on Trump. Don't deny us a real 1 on 1 debate. We all know Cruz will wipe the floor with you in discussing the substantive issues.

What else should we expect from a coward like Trump? If he can't hide behind insulting a lightweight like Rubio, he won't show up.

Trump: promises to stand up to Putin and ISIS, but scared of Megyn Kelly and Ted Cruz.

Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will not participate in Monday's Fox News debate, and will instead speak at AIPAC.

“I’m doing a major speech in front of a very important group of people that night," Trump said on "Fox & Friends."

He added that the Republican candidates have had enough primetime debates. "I think it's enough," he said.

This is an add on debate that serves no purpose to give Megyn Kelly another do-over.  Because there is not the level of controversy that surround the other debate that Trum skipped.  No one is interested or cares about this debate, except maybe a few Kasich sycophants in Ohio.

Yeah, they won't do it if it's just Cruz. They might do one of those MSNBC style one-on-one town hall things with Cruz however.

It makes sense if he is running for TRUMP's VP.

These primaries may end up being the VP primary between Cruz and Kasich. Tongue

Trying to get into Kasich's mind is hard because he's really weird, but I suspect his reasoning is that Cruz is the only non-Trump that might do well on the 3/22 contests and he would prefer Cruz does poorly so Kasich might get more of the #NeverTrump boost in more favorable ground like Wisconsin.

So by canceling the debate, Kasich denies Cruz any opportunity of a breakout moment, increases the odds of a Trumping on 3/22, which he hopes will help him in better states.

Not surprised. I've always said Trump doesn't like these things and he is always talking about skipping, now he seems to have a legit excuse.   That being said, the argument for doing so many is often primary voters only really engage when their state is about to vote. There have already been multiple debates in March so the people in the March states should have watched those. But with so many states coming up in mid to late April, I expect Cruz and Kasich will want to get a debate in April and one in May too.    If Trump goes along is hard to say, perhaps depends how how the rest of March goes for him

The issue with this is double edged: it probably exposes him as even more as a light weight if he only faces cruz and kasich; however, the only way he will be able to master these debates (or at least improve his performance) is to have practice in these forums and get used to speaking on subjects for more than 30 seconds and in soundbites. The one thing Bernie has done for Hillary is allow her to brush up on one on one debates - Trump has never had that and I can see how his lack of experience in a 1:1 debate may come back to bite him in Sept and Oct.

Big Strong Manly Man Donald Trump probably skipped the debate because he did not want to have a two-hour screaming match with Cruz.
