With Zootopia coming soon to mark the 55th Animated film to come of Disney itself [and not Pixar], this seemed inevitable.
This specific round is focused on the the first film and the films released in the 40's.

So here's what we've got.

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The one to start it all off, it's simplistic and dated in story and characters now and all the humans look and move a little creepy, it is the very first one made and practically the first animated movie ever.

2. Pinocchio: The second film, not much else to say here.

3. Fantasia:  Another milestone in its excellent fusion of music to animation.

4. Dumbo: Ah yes, the one with the big eared elephant, suggestive looking and sounding crows, and an ironic but very deranged sequence regarding pink elephants.

5 Bambi: And this is the one that people only remember because of what happened to Bambi's mother, oh and maybe Thumper and Bambi if we're lucky.

6. The Anthology Films (1943-1949): None of these have the greatest budgets, the first round of them were clearly propaganda films to promote FDR's "Good Neighbor Policy", the second round were simplistic shorts of many tales, and the final one had Sleepy Hollow and The Wind and the Willows combined (and I've only seen the Sleepy Hollow one of all these, hence the quick go over)

I have what is slated to be voted best in Red, Worst in Blue.  Go for one of each, but I'm sure with all the milestones, that might be difficult meaning two that could be "best". Whatever.

I have to give the nod to Fantasia honestly as the best.

Snow White was excellent in look and what it did, but between the way the humans move and their characterizations...it just feels empty, ultimately it's the dwarfs themselves that really sell the film. I'd probably place it at a very close second.

But there's just nothing that doesn't work in Fantasia, every segment says something, though my personal favorites are the "Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". Admittedly, I am classically trained so it does speak to my ears a little more.

As for the worst, I myself have to go with the anthology films. This is because they seem to either be really dated, or simply lacking the same effort just from what the reviews have said. I've seen Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and it certainly doesn't compare to the longer films.

I hate to jinx it, but there is something nice about Atlas having the heart to give Snow White a pass.

I got to see Fantasia when it was rereleased in the 60's. At that time Disney would cycle their classic movies every few years so there was a new audience anxious to see them in the theater. I wasn't into music at that time, and I had little exposure to classical music. The mix of color and sound shaped my tastes in music for years to come.

Best: Pinocchio (Bambi is very close though)
Least good: Uh, the anthologies I guess.
