Has anyone ever been a soccer referee?

I'm probably going to try refereeing recreational soccer. It can be a source of extra money, and I'm guessing I might enjoy it.

Any advice, warnings, or prophetic visions about this possible venture?

I refereed AYSO when my kids were in the league. I was just a volunteer ref, so there was no pay involved. The rules of soccer are relatively few in number, so it's easy to keep track of them. The most important thing to remember is that the ref is in charge of the game, but the athletes are what makes the game fun for them and the spectators.
