Los Angeles and San Francisco become 2.5 inches closer every year, because they are on opposite sides of the infamous San Andreas Fault.

It is often said that a picture can be worth a thousand words, and this is the Atlas site, so I thought a map would be most helpful.

The black arrows show the relative movement of the two tectonic plates of the earth's crust separated by the fault. The Pacific plate with Los Angeles is moving northward relative to the North American plate which includes San Francisco on its western edge.

I can go into much greater detail, but I hope that's enough.

The Pacific Plate (including LA) is shifting northwards, while the N. American Plate (with San Francisco) is shifting southwards. So both cities are slowly converging. The friction from this sliding is the cause of the seismic activity.

Here's the wikipedia image, It doesn't show the cities, like my initial post, but does illustrate the plate movement. The long red line is the San Andreas fault, and the arrows indicate the direction of plate shifts. If this doesn't show up, I'll look for some others.
