This is like the campaign equivalent of a cadaveric spasm.

One can be spiritual, without being religious. Not necessarily quoting bible versers, but prayer to Divine. And people understand that.

Jeb puts his foot in it again. It's always a bad idea to question someone's faith that way. I find Jeb an increasingly offensive persona. Certainly not in the Trump category, but I find him distasteful.

Of course Trump isn't a christian. But yes, as others have said, questioning his faith will only result in backlash. Plus this is an entirely worthless discussion - the fact that there are voters out there voting for someone because they have the same religion as you is a practice that needs to end.

I'll add one more thing - I have never seen Jeb Bush do anything that wasn't clumsy and poorly thought out.

Not a lot of evangelicals come out of Connecticut, in all fairness, John Ellis!

Why would Evangelicals vote for a Catholic? Especially when they could vote for a Protestant (Presbyterian).

Evangelicals generally have more in common with Catholics on political matters than they do Mainline Protestants.

Some Evangelics think like this guy. Warning - it's highly offensive sh*t. There really are a lot of kooks out there.

I have to admit, in comparison to Trump, Jeb really does sound weak. "He's a jerk", "I doubt he is Christian", "he is unhinged". I don't think he should go full gutter-mouth on Trump, but to me Jeb sounds pretty timid. Like a kid scared to confront his bully.

What? Obama won the Catholic vote twice, lost the Mainline vote twice but not in blowouts, and was creamed twice in the Evangelical vote.

Yes, and Sunnis and Shi'ites are both considered Muslim, but that doesn't mean they get along. wormyguy and I were quoting Trump who has tried to incite the Evangelical hatred of Catholics.

There's very little anti-Catholicism in modern day evangelicalism, it's almost all vocal but fringe figures. Evangelicals wouldn't have settled on Rick Santorum in 2012 if that were true, but would've just said "ah f[inks] it" and fell back on and returned to Bachmann or someone. And as someone noted around 2012, try finding an anti-Catholic article in a prominent evangelical magazine like Christianity Today.

Actually I just did. When I searched "Catholic" at christianitytoday.com I get a category titled Catholic-Evangelical Relations with this article is one of the first hits: http://www.christianitytoday.com/gleanings/2015/september/antichrist-brother-christ-protestant-pastors-pope-francis.html

Some graphs!

Now I know it's referring specifically to Francis and not a generic view of the Pope in general but still, hard to view that and argue that anti-Catholicism is one of the most motivating things amongst evangelicals.

And check out the rest of that category. Just about every reference to Francis is downright glowing. He's probably held in higher regard there than any individual Protestant pastor is.

I think they see it

Evangelical > Other Protestant > Catholic > Mormon > Hippy-dippy Protestant > Other

Evangelical > Other Protestant > Catholic > Mormon > Hippy-dippy Protestant > Other

Perhaps but the gap between Catholic and Mormon is way wider than any of the previous gaps. And the gap between Mormon and anything after also way wider than the Catholic/Mormon gap.

I think they see it

Evangelical > Other Protestant > Catholic > Mormon > Hippy-dippy Protestant > Other

Or in JCL speak Evangelical(including Messanic Jews and Charismatic Catholics like Matt Maher/Adurey Assad ) > Other Protestant > Eastern Orthodox > Conservative Roman Catholics(like Santorum and Jeb)

Trump doesn't get my vote for other reasons besides religious affiliation.

2012 for me was Paul (Evangelical). Now it's Paul (Other Protestant)/Cruz (Evangelical) > Rubio (cross denominational)> Carson (Evangelical) and that's it.
