West Virginia and Indiana are getting more conservative, but are Bayh and Byrd in trouble?

Yeah. Does anyone remember 2002? Ganske was supposed to be a strong challenger. There was a lot of talk about Harkin losing early on (though he went on to win by about ten points).

Harkin will be fine.  Iowa is getting more conservative, but it is still overall a fairly moderate state.  He is not Bayh or Byrd, but Iowa isn't nearly as conservative as either Indiana is or as West Virginia is on social issues

I hope not. I quite like Harkin. Hasn't he won some close senate races in the past?

He seems pretty popular in Iowa, he takes care of the farmers well so they overlook their ideological differences.  Harkin is safe.

No, he is not in trouble. He sits on farm boards, thus he will always be elected.

That might be, byt farmers won't throw him out. He is far too well liked by the important farmer's constituency.

I have on thing to say about states where ranchers and farmers control the outcome of elections:  Cute. Wink

He's been likened to Jesse Helms, a pol that while people disagreed with some of his politics they found him personally engaging and recognised that he "brought home the bacon" and as a result voted for him... in both Helms and Harkin's case by sometimes large margins.

I doubt he’ll be in any trouble, though I doubt someone with Harkins stances on the issues would win an open senate race for the Dems in a state like Iowa.
