Why did a Democratic bastion transform to a GOP bastion within a generation?

The area I'm talking about is Kings-Kern-Tulare-Fresno-Madera-San Joaquin-Merced counties in California.

This mirrors SW PA to a degree.

The Sky blue area in the map below. I made a mistake on Kern County which should be blue instead of green.

That's the answer to this thread's original question. Populist tendencies moved the South from D to R, and it is reflected in the Central Valley as well.

I wonder how long before the northern counties in the Central Valley, north of Sacramento, begin to mirror the southern ones?

Not the inner-burbs, but the OC is pretty terrible when it comes to social issues.

A lot of those counties you call Nor. Cal. are nowhere close to a 6.50 on the social scale. For example: Nevada county.
