Yeah, not exactly a surprise.

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-12-09/bloomberg-politics-poll-trump-muslim-ban-proposal

Almost two-thirds of likely 2016 Republican primary voters favor Donald Trump's call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S., while more than a third say it makes them more likely to vote for him.

Those are some of the findings from a Bloomberg Politics/Purple Strategies PulsePoll, an online survey conducted Tuesday, that shows support at 37 percent among all likely general-election voters for the controversial proposal put forward by the Republican front-runner.

“We believe these numbers are made up of some people who are truly expressing religious bigotry and others who are fearful about terrorism and are willing to do anything they think might make us safer,” Doug Usher, who runs polling for Washington-based Purple Strategies, said in his analysis of the findings. "This indicates that, despite some conventional wisdom expressed in the last 48 hours, this is unlikely to hurt Trump at least in the primary campaign."

More like option 2 then:

I'm still unsure if Trump will end up electorally like Frank Stronach (gaining ground in the polls rapidely, then making stupid comments about re-introducing the death penalty and doing worse than polls predicted on election day, but still managing a good result, then collapsing after the election because no substance) or HC Strache (continuously polling high, no matter what he/party says and also getting strong election results) ...

Backs this up:

Two local SurveyUSA polls show that Republicans support Trump's call for a ban on Muslim immigration by a wide margin:

Sam Diego, CA
Overall: 52/48

Republicans: 71/29
Independents: 47/53
Democrats: 37/63

Conservatives: 79/21
Moderates: 39/61
Liberals: 37/63

Fresno, CA
Overall: 59/41

Republicans: 69/31
Independents: 57/43
Democrats: 48/51

Conservatives: 84/16
Moderates: 56/43
Liberals: 42/58

This is why these comments won't hurt Trump in the least in the primary.

Favorable ratings among all voters:

51-47 Obama (+4)
36-42 Rubio (-6)
45-52 Hillary (-7)
31-47 Cruz (-16)
33-64 Trump (-31)

Among likely GOP primary voters only:

64-22 Rubio (+42)
61-26 Cruz (+35)
65-33 Trump (+32)

Among GOP primary voters, Trump's Muslim-ban comments make 37% more likely to vote for him, 16% less likely and 46% say it has no impact.

President Obama's favorability rating has been under water for months that clearly is a statistical anomaly. I have also failed to find a poll showing rubio that far below

AFAIK, there's nothing in the Constitution giving non-Americans religious freedom.

2/3 of republicans haven't read the constitution.

Except for the 2nd Amendment. They can recite that by heart at this point.

I'm starting to think that 2/3 of Republicans don't read anything.

You said what I was thinking, but didn't have the guts to say. They can have threads like "Praise To Rand Paul", "I'm A Moderate Hero", and "Trump's A Fascist" there.

On these numbers - it is worth noting that a politician can be personally unpopular and still win, just as long as his/her message is popular and he/she is effective at putting that message out. A textbook example would be Paul Keating in Australia in 1993.

Both the Bloomberg and SUSA polls mentioned Donald Trump's name in the question wording.  I'd be interested in seeing if you excised his name from the question, and just asked "Do you favor a ban on all Muslims entering the United States?" without context of where the idea came from, whether the poll results would have the same partisan breakdown.

That's very true, Trump has a cult of personality that makes some of his stances seem reasonable to his supporters, where normally they wouldn't give it the time of day.

At this point, everybody who isn't living under a rock knows about Trump and Muslims. A better question would be asking if the voters would support internet surveillance.

The thing is, many ordinary citizens (including those who respond to polls like this) are metaphorically living under rocks, and do not follow the news on a day to day basis to the extent that if you say "bar Muslims from entering the United States" they would automatically know that you're talking about a proposal by Donald Trump.

There is a difference between favorability and job approval. There are folks out there that like Obama or view him favorably, but have a negative view of his job as President.

The GOP is an anti American party that hates the Constitution. It's to be expected.
