Our problems in Iraq have nothing to do with our lack of an exit strategy and everything to do with our lack of an entry strategy.

Actually, entry was the best strategized part. Occupation strategy on the other hand was what was lacking.

Planning what you're going to do once you get in is an essential part of an entry strategy.  We didn't even plan how to secure known stockpiles of conventional weaponry or how we were going to restore civil order.

Im actually tired of hearing about the lack of exit strategy.  The President has one... Get the f!#@ out when the mission is over and the Iraqis can adequately protect themselves.

Which will probably be never. Exhibit A: South Korea.

"The best laid plans always become obsolete upon first contact with the enemy." I don't remember who said it but it's a great quote.

"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the president to explain to us what the exit strategy is."

regarding Kosovo, Houston Chronicle April 9, 1999

So Mr.Bush - exit strategy in Iraq is....

If this is the best you can come up with, you better hang it up now.

There's no comparison between the Kosovo War and the Iraq War.  The Kosovo War was purely optional, taken for humanitarian reasons and not because our national security was involved in any way.  Clinton specialized in that kind of war, while ignoring real threats.  In that case, it's much more appropriate to talk about exit strategy.

After Sept. 11, things changed, in case you didn't realize that.  In fact, it is the inability of many Democrats to grasp that basic point that makes them ineligible to run national security.  Whether or not Iraq had WMDs (and everybody, including most liberal Democrats, believed that they did), they were a sponsor of terrorism and more importantly, a major reason for the culture of hate, oppression and stagnation in the middle east that created the conditions under which broader terrorism thrived.

What was Lincoln's exit strategy in the civil war?  What was Roosevelt's exit strategy in World War II?  Exit strategy talk is applicable more to purely optional wars that don't directly involve US security interests than to wars taken in the name of pure national interest.  It's a pity you, and most in your party, can't see the difference.

Wakie:
dazzleman, Sept 11th and the Iraq war were not linked.  Bin Laden had repeatedly called for the overthrow of Hussein.  They were not allies.
