I rise this evening as the first Member of this Honorable House to speak in the new session.

For the House's general interest, I would like to inform Honorable Members, and in particular the Government, that I have unlocked all threads relating to the operation of the Parliament that were created by me in my capacity as Speaker of the Parliament.

This Parliament, the greatest body in our democratic institutions, is once again sitting and it must now deal with a Conservative Government free and independent of any coalition partner or agreements.  What will this new Government produce?  What will come of this Parliament?

It is with great excitement that I ask these questions, and it is will great vigor that the Members of the House on the opposition benches, and in particular in the Social Liberals, will probe, investigate, and question the Government.

We will support policies in the interest of the people and of the nation; we will oppose policies that run contrary to the best interests of those groups.

It is the expectation and the duty of the Government to govern; it is also the expectation and the duty of opposition parties to hold the Government to account before the Parliament.

It is the duty of all Honorable Members to act at all times in the greater interests of the people who have elected us to represent them in this place.  May all of our deliberations and decisions be guided by that fact and that mission.

I look forward to the months ahead.

Thank you, members, and thank you to Mr Barnes for his service. I shall avoid any pontificating on my part and get on to the business of this house. Order!

We shall now consider the motion introduced by Mr BaconBacon96, namely:

Mr. Speaker,

If there are no objections, which I assume is the case, I would ask the house for leave that we adopt the resolution by unanimous consent and move on to a confidence vote on the new administration.

Mr. Speaker,

The Socialist Party joins in expressing support for this motion and mourning for the victims of Paris; but furthermore we would like to add, if such were to be agreed upon by this house, to extend this resolution not only to the Paris attacks, but to all victims of the IS and religious extremist terrorism, be it in Beirut, Nairobi, Sinjar or Paris.

Mr. Speaker,

I rise under the assumption that the above motion has passed.

I seek the confidence of Parliament in support of the promises the Conservative Party made during the campaign. A freer, fairer, more prosperous nation is within reach. My new Government will unify taxation and other business issues, develop a comprehensive social safety net, and strengthen the national defense of South America.

Already, the Conservatives hold the confidence of the people, having been returned with a stronger mandate than thought possible. I hope the Parliament will join the people they represent.

Thank you.

Seeing no objections, I declare that the motion is hereby with unanimous consent.

We will now consider the Prime Minister's motion for a vote of confidence in the Government.

I open the floor to all honourable members to speak on the proposal.

Mr. Speaker,

The last government did important work in laying the foundation for this game. It is work that will endure, and I am enormously proud that I was part of it. I would echo the Prime Minister's words on Election Night in thanking all those who made it a success, particularly our erstwhile coalition partners in the Social Liberals.

In the election, the people of South  America gave the Conservatives a strong mandate to lead and implement our manifesto, which lays out a comprehensive plan for South America's future. It is as a result of that strong mandate that the President has advised Potus to continue in office as Prime Minister and to seek the confidence of the house. I am humbled to have been appointed deputy prime minister in addition to my work as Minister for Justice.

Our program for government, put before the people, was deep and comprehensive. Continuing the process of ever closer union for our peoples, harmonizing tax rates in a progressive but business-friendly manner, healing our relationship with Atlasia, protecting our nation with a strong, united defense, and establishing a detailed and strong social protection safety net.

With great ministers like Dereich as the reforming Chancellor, Bacon King as the talented Foreign Secretary, the brilliant Sanchez at Social Protection and the rising star Goldwater at the Infrastructure department, I am looking forward to the road ahead with optimism and confidence. For my own part, I am at work on important criminal justice legislation to get our courts moving, an item of business that will be laid before the house for debate within days.

A minority government presents new challenges, and new opportunities. All of us in the Conservative Party know that it will not always be easy. We will have to work closely with and consult with the opposition on every bill we propose. I believe that this will not lead to gridlock and obstruction, but to better laws and better government.

It will be a government that has learned from the last few months and a government with the experience to lead. We will be humble and we will listen.

I move for a vote.

Thank you.
