1976 was the last election to have two okay major party choices...good is something else...1956 maybe, or if you want better than that, 1916, discounting Wilson's stroke and the consequences. If that doesn't count (since the stroke happened, after all) 1908. My final answer.

EDIT - seems I am indeed confused...I thought Roosevelt ran that year. Myeh. 1860, then. Lincoln vs Douglas.
