Does anyone know what the VP short lists were for all Presidential candidates in modern history? I only know 2004, mainly because I wasn't able to follow stuff like that before this election (age), and I've done some web searches, but it's hard to find.

Thanks.

I think 2000 was Lieberman, Shaheen (would have been a great choice), and John Edwards (not sure about this one though).

For Bush, it ws basically only Cheney, as he picked himself.

Going completely by memory:

In 1992, Clinton had a short list with five names.  Gore, Bob Kerrey, Lee Hamilton, and two others.  Don't remember who the two others were anymore, but I think they were both senators.  Actually, I think one of them was from Pennsylvania.  PA did have one Dem senator at that time, didn't it?  <...trying to remember the guy's name....>

In 1996, there were about 7-8 names being floated as potential Dole VP, and I vividly remember that then-WI Gov. Tommy Thompson was one of them, as I was living in WI at the time, and it was getting a lot of coverage.  But then there were suddenly only about 6 names being floated, and Thompson wasn't one of them.  IIRC, the list included Carroll Campbell, John Engler, Frank Keating, Connie Mack, and John McCain.  I don't even know if Kemp was on the list.  IIRC, his selection was very last minute and took everyone completely by surprise.

Gore's 2000 list: At one point there were about 6 or 7 names, which, IIRC, included Bob Graham and Jeanne Shaheen, but I don't believe either of them survived to the "final four", which, if memory serves, was Lieberman, Bayh, Edwards, and Kerry.

Bush's 2000 list: I don't remember if there was ever an official short list leaked, but I seem to recall there being some rumors about Kasich, Frist, Hagel, and Fred Thompson.  John Danforth was the big name that was added to the mix in the closing days before Cheney was announced, with rumors suggesting that it was down to Cheney and Danforth.

I don't know about pre-1992.  I was just a kid back then, and not following politics.

I remember reading awhile ago that Ridge and Pataki were considered for Bush, however I'm not sure if they made it to the shortlist.

Our Democratic Senator was Harris Wofford who was appointed by Casey Sr. after Heinz died and was defeated by Rick Santorum in 1994.

In 1980 Reagan had tyhe choices of:

Gerald Ford (his first choice, but refuesed a "co-Presidency")

George H. W. Bush (Best choice by far)

Bob Dole (only to help in the Midwest)

Jack Kemp (Not a bad choice)

William Roth (Liberal Jewish Republican from Deleware)

I'm guessing Roth might have lost any hope of Reagan getting the South.

William Roth (Liberal Jewish Republican from Deleware)

Any relation to Jewish author Philip Roth?

Bush was the best choice, considering Dole had been the VP nominee in '76, and hadn't done much for Ford.

Actually Dole really helped Ford.  He probably held Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota for Ford.

Didn't he say something stupid in the VP Debate though, like blaming Democrats for soldiers killed in WWII or something.

He blamed the Democrats for every war in the 20th Century.

Our Democratic Senator was Harris Wofford who was appointed by Casey Sr. after Heinz died and was defeated by Rick Santorum in 1994.

He also won a special election against former two-term Governor Dick Thornburgh in 1992 by an astounding 10% (many analysts and pollsters predicted Gov. Thornburgh winning up until the final weeks).

1980
GOP
Rep Jack Kemp, NY
Sen Richard Lugar, IN
Rep Guy Vander Jagt, MI
Former President Gerald Ford
George H W Bush (nominated)

I've heard about the Ford one before...

Imagine if he did get the VP nod, and Reagan was shot in '81...would have been interesting.  Would Ford have gone for re-election in '84 (and yes, he could do so Constitutionally, as he hadn't even been elected to one term yet)...and if so, would he have won?
