Eisenhower obviously, since he was sane and MacArthur wasn't.

Very like my TL. Let's see what happens there... I admit I'm not entirely sure myself.

George Patton/Douglas MacArthur (Rep.): 269
Dwight Eisenhower/George Marshall (Dem.): 262

For explanation, see sig.

With hindsight, I'm sure George Lincoln Rockwell's endorsement REALLY helps MacArthur!

Without hindsight, how difficult would MacArthur be to defeat after Truman fired him? So what would we have here? Four Roosevelts, one Truman, two Eisenhowers, one Kennedy, one Johnson? After 36 years of Democrats, the Republican party might as well have thrown in the towel.

Why would a Democrat from Texas lose his home state.

As well as Kansas, the state he was much more closely affiliated with. Strom Thurmond's enthusiastic support for Patton helped, but mostly it's the fact that the election was about McCarthyism and the Cold War- to paraphrase George Wallace, Ike was "out-commied".

MacArthur was ridiculously popular after being fired by Truman...and if he played his cards right, he'd have won the election easily...Ike would be the only candidate to make it hard.

But why would a fired general defeat the hero of one of the most--if not, of the most--popular wars in history? Or do you remember President McClellan?

Sure. Had his peace movement not succeeded, we might still be engaged in an endless guerilla war in the South.

(I have heard Brandeis liberals use this line about Vietnam so many times that its GOT to be some idiot's actual quote. But whose?)
