Do you think people who swear excessively tend to lean more Democrat than those who never swear at all? The non swearing crowd tends to be made up of moralists who have reacationary views on censorship and sexuality. The occasional curser is likely more moderate in his voting records, though it possible he'll swing to the Democrat side.

One group that doesn't swear, Mormons, are obviously Republican leaning, but I think people that individually decide not to swear are not necessarily more conservative

Meh, I don't think there's a correlation. There are many Democrats I know who swear consistently, and vice versa.

You actually heard the mouth of an average cowboy or rancher? Cursin' in every other word....and they tend to be Republican.

People in the scene are near 100% D, and they talk like characters in a Tarantino movie.

Yeah, of course, I'd say. Even if some Democrats don't swear and some Republicans do, not swearing will be related to being strictly religious (however one defines that) and there is a relation between being strictly religious and voting Republican.

Yea Republicans are all over the map on the swearing issue. I mean you would have certain places like Utah where saying Golly is considered a swear and then you have guys like Ted Nugent, swearing like a drunken sailor.

You might find some regional correlation that would serve as a lurking variable, but I highly doubt there's a correlation based purely on political affiliation.

I think there are two variables being conflated here:

1. Profanity as the speech of the vulgar, the ordinary folk, those not part of the erudite educated elite.

2. Profanity as the speech of the profane, those who dislike behavioral restrictions, especially those most associated with religion.

The combination of the two leads to mixed results politically.

What TJ said. Of those that I hang out with who are more left-leaning, they tend to swear less, but that's largely by virtue of them being women. I would assume most places with a present "culture of masculinity" would involve more males swearing and vice-versa, regardless of political leanings.
