This is so tactical. He's been saying stuff like this for awhile (since he realized he is retiring) and I think it will be entertaining to hear the ultra right bitch about it on mediums like talk radio.

Good move by Ryan. If the Freedom Caucus endorses him, the GOP can attempt to put the leadership kerfuffle behind them. If not, he sets them up for the challenge of finding their own candidate to field 218 votes and making them look even worse...if that is even a possibility.

Mo Brooks (confirmed Freedom Caucus member) has mentioned he is personally concerned that Paul Ryan is too pro-amnesty because his best friend is a hispanic AND a democrat (Luis Gutierrez)

also the Freedom Caucus is said to be very concerned about Paul Ryan due to his endorsement from Harry Reid

The FC Caucus seems dumber than a box of rocks. How shocking - not.

Mo Brooks has certainly been in the news a bit lately. Beyond being way out there beyond the looking glass, he must be an attention whore. He might fit in well right here on Atlas! Tongue

They are going to be cutting it awfully close on the debt ceiling.

Unless Boehner cuts a deal on it before his time ends, right? Hadn't I seen somewhere that he was talking about doing that?

Surely enough Pubs will vote with the Dems to raise it, right? I don't see what this has to do with the Speaker contretemps.

Well, if Boehner tries to bring up a clean debt ceiling bill, the Freedom Caucus is going to bring forward a motion to vacate the chair, and it is that same Freedom Caucus that prevented McCarthy from taking the gavel from Boehner, and it is the same freedom caucus that might now prevent Ryan from becoming Speaker. The conservative blogosphere is treating Ryan as a compromising sell-out that, due to Harry Reid's clever endorsement, is the pick of Obama and Democrats for Speaker. I honestly don't know how you could possibly separate the debt ceiling fight with the chaos in Republican leadership.

Is the motion to vacate really that much of a threat? Don't they still need a majority of the chamber to vote to actually vacate the chair?

The fact that the FC doesn't recognize Reid's blatant political shenanigans is hilarious.

Anyway, Ryan has several demands of his own if he's going to be speaker.  Three major ones stick out, 1.) Any rules changes must be approved by the entire conference.  2.) No motions to vacate the chair. 3.) Everyone in the conference must vote for him, without a single dissenter.

So Ryan is walking an incredibly thin line here.  The ball is in the Freedom Caucus' court now.

If I was Obama I would "leak" a Nixon-style White House recording, consisting of maniacal laughing and saying stuff like "at last, Paul Ryan, the man who will bend to my will!"

The surrogates of the Freedom Caucus are making a huge deal about this - the talking point is "the Motion to Vacate was created by a great American, Thomas Jefferson. Why does Paul Ryan want to erase the Founding Fathers' legacy??"

They do, and it's not a threat because Dems have already said they'd support Boehner in such a motion.

Yeah, no surprise with the Ryan. Kind of sad, though; I was hoping that we would be seeing a Tea Party takeover leading to the GOP's imminent downfall in 2016. In all honesty, Ryan is probably the best strategic choice for the GOP to make. He's popular, has positions that both sides of the GOP can tolerate, and is charismatic enough to actually not let the GOP die. Sad

and lol Harry Reid

Don't despair, there's still time for the Freedom Caucus to screw everything up!

Webster says the Freedom Caucus is still supporting him.

Given a choice between supporting Ryan (without getting their demands met) and getting a Speaker who needs Democratic votes, which would the Freedom Caucus choose?
