You're not supposed to mock a mockery.

But I did, and you can't stop me, so there.

Another reason why this statistic about Boxer is stupid: 300,000 more Californians voted for Kerry for President.  In senatorial elections that run concurrently with presidential elections, incumbent senators (whose party tends to win the state's EVs) usually get way more than the presidential candidate.
Wrong Kerry got 6,737,355 out of 12,383,678 votes (Beating Bush 54.4%- 44.4%) . Despite that fewer people voted for Senator, Boxer got   6,947,021  out of 12,036,679 votes (Beating Jones 57.8% - 37.8%)%.

I'm amazed at how many times this statistic can be said without ever saying why it's being said.

Democrats lost almost any important race in 2004 and people like jfraud and shira need to take some solace in the fact that an incumbent won more votes than anyone before in a state where more votes than ever before were up for grabs.

Oh, as long as we're doing brain dead trivia:

Question: Who is the president who received more votes than any other presidential candidate in the history of the United States?

Answer: George W. Bush got 62,040,610 votes, the largest total in American history.

Question: Who is the presidential candidate who received the second largest amount of votes in the history of the United States?

Answer: John Kerry got 59,028,111 votes, the second largest total in American history.

This just makes him the biggest LOSER in history.

If 2008 turns out to be a real HOT Presidential election, expect Cornyn or Feinsten to come close to matching that number.  Still, this is a stupid thread as you only need about 55% of the vote in California to get 7.5 million and is hardly a landslide...

Question:  Who is the Senator who was elected by the highest percentage of votes in Senate history?

Answer: Michael Crapo (R) got 99.18% of the vote in 2004, which to my knowledge, is the highest percentage of votes by which a Senator has ever been elected (and have opposition from one of the two major parties).

But John Kerry got more votes than Ronald Reagan, so he was clearly more popular than even Reagan. Tongue

Jones still beat the beloved [insert any Democratic or Republican Senator except Boxer, Feinstein, or Schumer] and only got 38% of the vote!

By the reasoning on this thread yes, because he got more votes than most others

Barbara Boxer (2004 Senate Race) - 6,949,021
Abraham Lincoln (1860 Presidential Race) -  1,865,908

Now, it's pretty obvious that population has nothing to do with this.  Look at the two numbers I posted.  Barbara Boxer has more votes than Abraham Lincoln.  What does that tell you?

Ah crap.  Does this mean we'll get a Boxer Monument in Washington DC four times as big as Lincoln's?  Wink

What a funny thread. My favorite Senator, Charles Grassley, won 70% in his race against a well meaning Conservative Democrat named Art Small. This was the greatest landlside in Iowa history for a U.S. Senator.

Clearly the true winner here is the Indian National Congress. They received 103,408,949 votes in 2004 with only 26% of the vote!
