West Point thrives on tradition, including a mass pillow fight held on campus to give first-year students a chance to blow off steam after a "tough first summer" of basic training, academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen Jr. said in a statement.

But the pillow fight held August 20 got rough, with 30 members of the class of 2019 requiring medical attention and 24 suffering concussions, Caslen said in a statement.

Other injuries included a broken nose, a dislocated shoulder, and a hairline fracture of a cheekbone, he said. All the students have returned to duty.

Is it bad that I'm more amused that this is a longstanding military tradition than I'm concerned about the injuries? Tongue

How do you get a concussion from a pillow fight? Does someone punch you through the pillow or something?

I imagine most of those injuries are from falls, given the surface that the fight is taking place on.

Have you ever been hit in the head hard with a pillow?  It can kind of ring your bell.  Now, have a large man in top physical shape, who may have engineered his pillow for extra denseness, who's already been bashing heads for a couple of minutes, making the pillow even more dense, who may be a little pissed because his bell just got rang a bit and then have him nail you in the head when you're not ready for it at good angle.  Plus the surface, as BaconBacon just mentioned....yeah, people are going to get hurt.

But they should keep doing it if they want, sounds like fun!

Some screwed-up people filled their pillows with rocks.

OK. This makes more sense. A pillow could knock someone off balance, but is otherwise harmless.

I was losing badly and my friend was whaling on me right on the head, so I burst a blood vessel in my eye (I believe) and my vitreous humor (the fluid space between the lens and the retina) was filled with blood. Since that eye was out of commission and my other eye has never worked at all (retinopathy of prematurity), I couldn't see until I went over to Michigan to get a vitrectomy.
