The election of 2008 was exciting. Can it be overtaken by the 2016 election?

These items make an election more exciting
1. Open seat
2. Disputed primaries in both parties
3. Candidates who have interesting biographies
4. Hot international news
5. Surprise: people know the result only after the polls are closed

2008 fullfiled items 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Both Democratic and Republican primaries were exciting. We didn't know on September 2007 who would be the two major candidates (Hillary vs. Giuliani?). A black man against a white woman made the Democratic primary even more interesting. 2008 was the beggining of the world big crisis.
Only item 5 was not fullfiled, because we knew on Monday that Obama would win. Considering the last four presidential elections, only in 2008 the result was known in the eve.

2000 fullfiled items 1 and 5, but not 2, 3 and 4. Gore's nomination was almost uncontested. Bush defeated McCain easily. Soon after the 1998 midterms, we were expecting Bush vs. Gore. A VP against the son of a former president don't add emotion.

2016 will fullfill 1 for sure, at least half 2, maybe 3, 4 for sure and maybe 5.
The Republican primary will be very long. On the other party, Hillary's nomination is almost safe, but not like Gore's in 2000.

It depends on who the Republicans nominate. If Bush is the nominee it will be pretty boring, but if anyone else is the nominee, it will be exciting.
