What presidents would have run for a third term? Eisenhower? Reagan? Clinton?

The only one I can really see is Clinton, maybe Reagan...

Why wouldn't that be 2000?

Eisenhower and Reagan would likely have retired just because they were getting too old, but Clinton almost certainly would have tried for the third term. A third Clinton term is an excellent premise for alternate history. Would we still have experienced the current sluggish economy? Would we have anything close to the "War on Terror" going on? Would the GOP begin to filibuster Clinton's choices for federal judgeships?

I'm not at all convinced he would have won a third term, but if he did, the economy would have taken a serious hit on his popularity.

After 9/11, he would rebound I imagine, but the economy would have been much worse without the tax cuts, and he would easily been defeated in 2004.

probably because the Lewinski thing was really hurting him.  He would really need to step down.  Gore was an insider and a person who most people knew, with just the name recognition and money, he'd be good for 2000.  Clinton would come back in 2004 with a slogan "It's STILL the economy, stupid" and would likely win the liberal states, plus enough swing states that he could win an election (and get greater than 50% the first time).
