From Political Wire:

A new Research 2000 poll shows Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) defeating all possible challengers in the 2006 Vermont Senate race. Sanders leads businessman Richard Tarrant (62% to 18%), Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie (59% to 23%) and Major General Martha Rainville (61% to 18%).

Adding to Sander's momentum was an endorsement from DNC Chief Howard Dean, even though he's not a Democrat. The Bennington Banner quotes Dean: "A victory for Bernie Sanders is a win for Democrats."

I couldn't agree more!  This is actually very exciting stuff.  An actual left-wing voice in the Senate?  When did we last have that?

Wellstone.

You could consider Boxer left-wing as well and in some regards, Feingold.

Well, somewhat.  But aren't they all much more mainstream/moderate than Sanders?

Sanders isn't actually a nut you know... his voting record is much more moderate than his reputation.

He's a great man of conviction. Wish there were more politicians like him.

Well, obviously. The Democrats are radical socialists. I'm not sure why Sanders insists on calling himself an 'Independent' when there is a major party that matches his views so perfectly! Perhaps he just likes the attention, but it's hard to tell.

Oh I'm aware he is basically a moderate like Boxer or Feingold, but at least he has a bit more panache, being an independent.  To be honest I doubt he'll even say anything very leftist once he's in the Senate.  They never do.

Yeah, maybe if he was in the Senate already, the Real ID Act would have only passed 99-1.

When they left the Capitol three hours ago.

Go Sanders!  The GOP will obviously not win, so we might as well lift up a face that will marginalize the left.

I initially forgot Douglas was in his first term.

Against these other candidates Sanders is likely to win.

Douglas is actually in his second term.  Governors are elected every two years in Vermont.

Great Sanders interview here:

http://www.bernie.org/documents/20050523.asp

It's so refreshing to hear such a straight-talking politician who focuses on real issues that truly affect people. I think he will end up being a huge credit to the left as he will be one of the leading voices in the Senate  on many issues.

People can label him all they want, but his history shows that he represents the people's interests as much or more than any other representatative in the House.
