From the Omaha World Herald:

Some national Republicans would like to convince Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman to skip an election battle with fellow Republican Tom Osborne and challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson instead.

"A dream ticket in Nebraska is Osborne for governor and Heineman for U.S. Senate," said a national GOP strategist in Washington, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Heineman says "no." He wants to remain governor and is in the race to stay - a certain popular former football coach notwithstanding, an aide said.

"No one has approached him with what you're asking, and he said even if they had he would not be interested," said Aaron Sanderford, the governor's spokesman.

Heineman became governor in January after second-term Republican Mike Johanns was tapped by President Bush to become U.S. agriculture secretary.

The new governor has announced plans to seek the office in his own right next year, and he was endorsed in that quest by U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.

But Osborne's candidacy, announced last weekend, threw a curve into the governor's race.
...
The GOP strategist said a Heineman Senate candidacy would catapult that race onto the national stage.

"Heineman would be able to draw resources from across the country to defeat Nelson," he said.

He also said Republicans would prefer that two of the state's top GOP officeholders not square off against each other in the same primary.

Nelson declined to comment Friday.

For the GOP in Nebraska, this would be the correct move.

No one's going to beat Osborne, maybe not even Jesus Christ.

Heineman would provide a very real challenge for Ben Nelson, a much better one than Stenberg.

I would try to talk Osborne into running for Senate instead but I guess he's had his eye on the Governor's mansion for awhile.

how would Rep. Tom Osbourne perform against Sen. Ben Nelson in a head-to-head contest, compared to Gov. Dave Heineman?

Osborne's only going to run for governor.

Heineman would be a strong candidate against Nelson.  After all, if I'm being honest that Stenberg (a washed-up hasbeen) can get 45%, Heineman can certainly get more.

As I pointed out before, Stenberg has done better than 45%. In the 2000 race, he only lost by two points to Nelson - 51% to 49%. But I would much rather have Heineman than Stenberg (though either way, I like the GOP chances when it comes down to a pickup here).

Osborne is kind of old and just really wants to be Governor. He can't be beaten, either in a primary or general. Actually the ideal scenario for the GOP would have been Osborne taking out Nelson, since that's what the national party cares about, but Heineman is a major upgrade over Stenberg or whoever else.

I don't think Stenberg would pull more than 45% if he were the nominee.  He got 49% last time, but Ben Nelson has proven himself to be a very conservative, independent Dem in the Senate, plus he won't be running under GWB on the ballot.

Heineman v. Nelson would be a very close race, probably depends on how voters perceive Heineman's job as governor by 2006; right now they don't know him very well.

Osborne v. Nelson would be an easy victory for Osborne.  But I don't think he wants six more years in DC; he's already in his 70's.

Being endorsed by Hagel may be the kiss of death.

Republicans in Nebraska are really getting irked with Hagel.
