Mr. Speaker, sir, if I may rise on the indulgence of the chair, I would like to thank you for your exemplary service to the previous parliament and the foundation of our republic.  Before this new parliament becomes consumed in the many tasks that lay ahead of us, I think it is fitting that we recognize you, Mr. Speaker, for your service to our nation.

Mr. Speaker, can we open nominations for the election of a new Speaker as our first order of business?

I would second opening nominations for Speaker.

We are here at the start of something fresh, new, and exciting. I look forward to accomplishing our worthwhile goals during this Parliament. The first couple orders of government following the Speaker elections will be the Order of Parliament Act and the Government of South America Act. Each of these pieces of legislation will contribute to the rock solid foundation of our game.

I look forward to the work ahead. Let's get going.

While I'm sure that Mr Cranberry would make an excellent Speaker he is, alas, not an Honourable Member.

Is there any rule that states that the Speaker must be an MP?

Going by the Westminster model yes. I mean we take it to the extreme's in the UK in that even the monarch isn't allowed in the chamber

Oh look: Atlasian-style legalism. It doesn't take long does it? But implicitly the chair of any assembly or group is a member of that assembly or group.

Yes, and we most certainly don't want to get ourselves immersed in that again, do we?

Convention would suggest that the Speaker be a Member and this government is committed to following that principle with the nomination of the honorable Barnes.

Alright, alright. As I understand it, in various systems, the speaker is occasionally not an MP and was only suggesting Cranberry since I hold him in high regard, thus a "nomination."

I was unaware that I was anything otherwise. Let's just not get bogged down in endless minutia, that's all.
