I've decided to start this thread after reading this extraordinary story

800,000! 800,000! Meanwhile there is a 'crisis' in Calais concerning only a few thousand. And Slovakia will only accept Christians. An extraordinarily imbalanced situation is developed in the EU right now in regards to this, but what is to be done is another question entirely.

I was surprised to see there wasn't a thread on this so use this to post anything on latest developments in regards to the situation in the Med, South Eastern Europe, Syrian and Eritrean Refugees and anything relevant.

You know what would make today's tragedy much less likely? Removing the strongest incentives for the people smugglers by making it much easier to legally immigrate to the west. The fact that people take such dangerous measures to go to the west is due to the fact that they have no other choice if they want to enter the west (and you are truly the height of naivety if you think the pull of the west to migrants can be wished away).

Sure, but since European countries do not want African/Arabic immigration, that will not happen. A ban on seeking asylum outside your own continent and increased crackdowns on illegal migrants is the likely outcome.

That is very likely but I was talking about policies that would minimize deaths not possibly increase them.

Does anyone have actual figures as to how much each country has accepted up till now and - if possible - a breakdown of the various nationalities accepted? I mean, it has been obvious from the start that this isn't just from Syria.
