A new Gallup poll today shows that 2/3 of Austrians want to re-introduce border controls:

66% re-introduce border controls
27% keep the free movement in place

Also:

"Would you mind if your municipality takes up asylum seekers worth 1.5% of the municipal population ?"

61% don't mind
25% would have a problem with it

"Would you personally house asylum seekers in your apartment/house ?"

70% No
23% Yes

Meanwhile Macedonia is sealing their border with Greece and police there is teargassing asylum seekers.

Also, Bulgaria calls in the army to secure the border because they fear that the illegals from Greece will now take the Bulgaria route with Macedonia blocked off.

Despite all the negative news about the asylum crisis here (80.000 people coming in) and the massive incompetence/neglect of the SPÖVP government, I should also point out that there have been no serious violent acts so far in the country against asylum seeker or their centers/homes.

In other countries, like Germany etc., asylum centers and homes are already burning down to the ground ...

Massive riots near Dresden:

Dresden riots: Protesters in Germany attack refugee buses shouting 'foreigners out'

Up to 1,000 protesters have clashed with police in eastern Germany in riots reportedly sparked by the arrival of 250 migrants.

Police said protesters shouting "foreigners out" and carrying banners against the "asylum flood" threw bottles and stones at busloads of asylum seekers arriving in Heidenau, near Dresden.

At least 31 officers were hurt in violent scuffles as police used tear gas to disperse crowds.

Peaceful demonstrations began after news spread that the town was welcoming a large number of refugees who are set to be housed in an empty building.

What?

There have been a number of arson attacks around Germany recently, in which proposed asylum seeker homes have been destroyed - prior to the asylum seekers arriving there.

I didn't know that, but I would hardly call it "burning homes to the ground". Not a single person was injured or killed, of course that doesn't mean that it's not despicable.

Despite the mega-influx of asylum seekers (80.000 this year), there are also examples of how it can be done:

http://kurier.at/chronik/oesterreich/helfen-als-selbstverstaendlichkeit-23-jaehrige-nimmt-30-syrer-auf/147.508.519

A 23-year old woman from a town in my district decided to take up 30 asylum seekers from Syria recently and housed them in the hotel of her parents.

Now, the (Muslim) Syrian men are helping to renovate the local (Catholic) church, voluntarily:

...

So, it's not all bad.

Today was another sad day on the migrant front and (sadly) I predicted that this would happen a few weeks ago:

I don't know what our horrible SPÖVP government is waiting for ? More excesses in the camps ? Dead people ? Attacks by racists against asylum seekers ?

Time to shut down the border and increase border controls by 1000%.

Migrant crisis: Grim find of bodies in Austria lorry

At least 20 migrants have been found dead in a lorry abandoned in a motorway lay-by near the eastern border with Hungary, the Austrian authorities say.

The number of dead could be as high as 50, police say. Their bodies had started to decompose.

The lorry has been moved to an undisclosed location for detailed examination.

The grim find comes as a summit focusing on migration takes place in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Tens of thousands of migrants from conflict-hit states in the Middle East and Africa have been trying to make their way to Europe.

Austria's Chancellor Werner Faymann said the tragedy showed once again "how necessary it is to save lives by combating criminals and people traffickers".

The vehicle - a refrigerated lorry with Hungarian licence plates - was parked off the A4 motorway between Parndorf and Neusiedl am See, according to Burgenland police chief Hans Peter Doskozil.

Let's hope this tragedy will lead to Merkel, Faymann and Co. introducing the tough measures that are now needed and that I have advocated for months now: shutting down the border, increase border control significantly, introduce a dragnet intra-country search for people smugglers and increase sentences for caught people smugglers from 5 years max. to 15-20 years in prison.

These measures are the only way to send the people smugglers a simple lesson: That they cannot sh*t on our heads and the heads of the traumatized migrants and crowd in tons of people into trucks like chicken and let them slowly die as they drive for hours through Europe, with 30°C outside and doors locked.

But as I know the politically correct, naive left-leftists Merkel, Faymann and Co. I'm sure they will not learn from these tragedies and just keep on doing what they have done until now: talking and leading a comfortable life of elitists with their 10.000€ monthly salary, far removed from the needs of the average German/Austrian citizen and even further away from the lives of the refugees ...

...how would that help exactly? I mean in the context of the specific horrifying news of today.

... by preventing future such tragedies.

The people smugglers "won't get it" otherwise if these tough measures are not taken. They will just continue to sh*t on our heads in their quest for profit and as a consequence of that- kill the asylum seekers.

By the measures I have explained above.

Every "educated" people smuggler knows that the current leaders of most of Europe (excl. UK's Torie government) are a bunch of spineless, naive tools who are basically telling the smugglers to keep on sh*tting on our heads and that no further measures will be taken against them. They jump out of their trucks when a police car approaches and disappear into the darkness of the night, leaving 50 (dead) or apathic migrants behind. Do you expect the overweight 55-year old Austrian police officers to try and chase the people smuggler through the darkness ? Nope. And if one gets caught, he'll get 18 months in prison with 12 on probation. WOW ! That's the reality. Unless people smugglers do not get the impression that Europe's leaders actually have a spine and go after them, they will continue to try and truck in people. Don't know why it's so hard for you to understand this ...

These tough measures, coupled with camps at the countries of origin (or nearby) where potential asylum seekers can file their requests without being bused through Europe, would be more effective and prevent future tragedies.

Even a seriously broken clock like Austrian Chancellor Faymann (Social Dems) is right once:

Faymann today said he favours a EU-wide asylum quota plan that basically forces non-complying countries like Poland, Portugal, Baltics etc. (which are taking in almost no asylum seekers) to take them, or face a cut in their EU-net receipts. The big "net payers" like Germany, Austria, Sweden etc. (who are also taking the lion's share of asylum seekers) would simply stop payments to the net receivers who are lazy in taking in the refugees. Apparently, these countries only think the EU's good if they receive money from us, but not when it comes to taking responsibility. Time to apply the thumbscrews on these countries and cut EU funding for them ...

10.000 migrants are expected to arrive in Burgenland (Eastern Austria) in the next week.

There's a rush now by the illegals to try and get to Austria/Germany quickly, because the Hungarians are about to finish their border fence to Serbia, plus they are introducing a detention zone and tough laws that anyone who destroys part of the border fence will face up to 5 years in prison.

The Austrian Red Cross and Army has already set up huge tents near the Hungary border to "welcome" the illegals ...

According to the Standard article:

http://derstandard.at/2000021485062/Ungarn-will-Fluechtlinge-an-Grenze-internieren

The Fidesz government plans to introduce a new "mass immigration emergency law" next week, that will come into force in Mid-September and will give authorities great powers to combat the flow on the border.

The law will allow the police and army forces at the border to create a so-called 60 meter "transit zone" to intern illegal migrants who are breaking through the barbed wire. The security forces will also be allowed to use tear gas, water cannons and batons to hold them in the zones. Illegals who are entering Hungary by crawling through under the provisional barbed wire fence could be imprisoned by 1-3 years, those who are willingly destroying parts of the fence up to 5 years. The people will be held in the "transit zones" until they can be deported or relocated into camps.

Also, the border patrol force will be heavily increased in the next weeks under the law. The barbed wire fence is only preliminary, there will be a bigger (more robust) fence ready by November, which will seal off the whole Hungary/Serbia border.

Could the traffickers not just switch to alternative routes through Romania or Croatia?

Yes.

I guess this is exactly what Hungary's government wants ... (of course they would then have to create an even longer fence at their Romanian/Croatian border).

Exactly, so why would they want that?

Because if they somehow manage to secure their border and smugglers are forced to enter Central Europe via Croatia and Slovenia, or Romania/Ukraine/Slovakia - their argument has won. Their border security worked to prevent smuggling through Hungary. Hungary is safe from the mass immigration and people go elsewhere. Of course, there's a long way to go and it's highly hypothetical ...

A couple thousand migrants arrived in Vienna today via train from Budapest.

Police stopped the trains at the border because they were heavily overcrowded and a security risk. After checking the papers, some were returned to Budapest - but most were able to travel on.

Also, most will continue their travel to Munich, Germany or further north.

Wtf? Why on earth?

Because we have now reached the point where this movement has become unstoppable.

Police all around are simply unable to do something about it and they just let them pass ...

Interesting statistic:

Of the 3.650 migrants who arrived yesterday in Vienna's railway stations by train from Hungary, only 6 (!) applied for asylum in Vienna.

The other 3.644 or so just waited for trains to Germany, as police just stood by and let them drive on ...
