Nixon announces 1972 campaign!

“Good evening; after much consideration, I am announcing my candidacy for a second term as your President. Over the last four years, America has turned back the tide. My administration’s dynamic policies have left America and the world in a safer and more stable environment than what we found four years ago. We in the administration are proud of our record, but we are not yet complete with the tasks we laid forth four years ago. The great silent majority screamed in our favor four years ago; tonight, they talk quietly content.

I, however, while proud of my actions as President, am not content. I promised the American people four years ago that we would have peace with honor in Vietnam. We have yet to reach that goal, and I will not allow another President of radical orientation to undo all that has been done. We have, with praise from both sides of the political spectrum, established diplomatic relations with China after decades of darkness, and have implemented some of the widest and broadest environmental protection programs in American history.

Having been to nearly one hundred nations in my lifetime-perhaps the most widely traveled President in American history-I have visited Communist nations, nations that exist half socialist and half free, nations torn by war and disorder, nations ravaged by poverty and disease, and nations plagued by economic stagnation and moral decline.

The United States is not one of those nations.

Some of my opponents in the Democratic Party want to turn back the clock; their records show for it. New York City, Las Angeles, Chicago, and other major American cities still are outposts of poverty in our own nation. And yet, the mayors of some of these cities are more interested in working for themselves than they are for their constituents. I am not that kind of politician. I am the President for all of America, and I’ll stand for those whose voices are willfully ignored or silenced by their local authorities and representatives. One of my declared challengers even willfully entered classified and highly sensitive information into the congressional record. Another has willingly switched his political affiliation in order to further his own ambitions after leaving behind a record of blight and decay.

I understand that opposition to my candidacy does not come from the left alone; from the right, the forces of bigotry have united in their opposition to my efforts to desegregate schools. They have rallied against peace with honor in favor of perpetual war, their regard for human life being nonexistent. They have rallied around dangerously uninformed conspiracy theories about our efforts to open up the People’s Republic of China to the light of democracy and capitalism. Yet, they have disunited in order to seek the presidency on several fringe party ballot lines, and their efforts to either derail my administration or the fragile sense of unity that we have strived to foster after a decade of violence at home and abroad will be fruitless. Their efforts will fail, as the American people have the good sense to reject radicalism in all of its forms.

My fellow Americans, let us take a look at the policies of yesterday and today. Let us take a fair look at my record, and have an open, honest discussion about what has been done, what will be done, and what has not been done. I know the answer I will have when this conversation concludes. And I am sure you will have the same as well. So tonight, I leave you with this thought: are we better off than we were four years ago?

Thank You, God Bless America, and may God Bless you.”

Reporter: Mr. President, Congressman John Schmitz has accused you of being a communist in a...interesting campaign appearance in Mississippi. What do you think of his campaign?

Nixon: Well, I for one am glad he is running as an independent. He is a national embarrassment as it is, and even more so to the Republican Party. A candidate who advocates the literal re institution of segregation, much less slavery, which Mr. Schmitz appears to be campaigning on-though frankly, his statements are too incoherent for me to fully grasp- is not in the mainstream of any decent American. Mr. Schmitz is a particularly vile candidate, and I look forward to not having to engage him and his irrelevant campaign any more than I just did. Next question-yes, Helen.

Helen Thomas: Mr. President......

Statement from the White House:
President Nixon has relieved General John K. Singlaub from duty for violating Defense Department Directive 1344.10, which prohibits active duty military personnel from endorsing a candidate, cause, or party.

President Nixon will also soon travel to New Hampshire tomorrow to file for the New Hampshire Republican Primary ballot in person.

Did you run these claims over with Lumine? Because Zell Miller, Milton Friedman and some of these army endorsements directly fly in the face of the game and the law itself.

I'll change those Freidman and The Soliders are all veterans beacuse that's what there title says "Veterans Grassroots Outreach Officers" Veterans don't mean active duty if you didn't know that. And the rest are already secured and speaking of Zell Miller he was the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Georgia at that time I don't think that really is such a high position.
But the Governor of Georgia is a candidate in this game. Zell Miller would obviously back Carter.

Woman: Mr. President, my son Jacob is currently stationed in Saigon. I want him home. What will you do to end the war?

Nixon: Madame, I thank you for your son’s courage and duty. I too want your son home-I want all of our boys home. But we cannot and will not capitulate to communists. And that is why we must strive for peace with honor, so that the sacrifice of so many lives is not in vain. What is peace with honor? I hear that often at these events. I support a peace treaty that first and foremost guarantees the independence of South Vietnam. I support a peace treaty that guarantees our POWs will be returned unharmed. And most importantly, I want a treaty that guarantees no further US involvement-that we can wipe our hands clean of South East Asia, knowing we did what we had to do, and knowing that we’ll never have to do it again. Does that answer your question?

Endorsements
House Minority Leader Gerald Ford

“Under President Nixon’s steady hand, America has restored its relations abroad, has regained the trust and esteem of the world community, and most importantly, has been a leading figure for peace abroad. Mr. Nixon has truly lived up to his inaugural address, and has earned the greatest title bestowed to any man: peace-maker.”

Senator Robert Dole

“President Nixon has earned another term. I cannot think of any reasons why Howard Morgans, John Ashbrook, or Barry Goldwater Jr. have to challenge him. They are dividers. Nixon is a uniter. They are ambitious. Nixon is selfless. They are radicals. Nixon is reasonable. They are insiders-in the halls of Congress and in the corporate board rooms. Nixon is an outsider, and a fighter.”

Senator Howard Baker

“Nixon has cracked the solid south in a way that his rivals in the Grand ‘Ole Party could never have done. Nixon has built bridges to white southern Democrats and black voters alike. The common theme we are seeing here is that Nixon brings people together. And we need four more years of that kind of common sense conservatism, not radical ideology or radical rhetoric.”

Former Governor John Connally

“I am proud to lead the Democrats for Nixon effort. As the Democratic Party hosts a radical hodge-podge of leftists, radicals, hippies, and hell-raisers, I can simply not in good conscience call myself both an American and a Democrat. I will be voting for the President. And I suspect that many decent Americans will join me.”

Nixon Debate Responses.

We have a court system, and I must enforce the rulings of the court system. The fact is, unless the legislation pertaining to the desegregation is repealed, the practice will continue. As of 1970, less than ten percent of African American students attend segregated schools. This is progress, and I’ll be damned if I let us reverse the course.

The draft will and can end. We are currently undergoing the process of handing over must combat roles to the South Vietnamese, and the need for the draft will dissipate sometime in the next year or so. Until then, the status quo will continue for the time being. Let me be clear; draft dodgers are nothing less than bums. When I was called up, I went. So did so many other young men who have given their lives on the streets of Saigon and in Da Nang. The draft dodgers transgressions will not go unpunished.

I supporter Mr. Goldwater Sr. in 1964 and while I have strong disagreements with Mr. Goldwater Jr, I’d certainly support his campaign. I believe we as Republicans should work together and not against one another to build a more prosperous and peaceful America.

The fact that an honorable peace no longer appears at hand is solely due to the intransigence of the government in Hanoi. We can entice them to the table as some of our friends in the Democratic Party have suggested, but I am assured that such efforts could fail. We have to drag them to the table, and I will do exactly that.

Just as an observer, I like the plan. I think it ads spice to this game. This is by far the best interactive game I've seen yet (especially with the late entries and what not) and using Bremmer effectively is excellent. It also prevents another post like my own where a player just goes "too busy to play. Candidate XXX endorses Senator YYYY. Sorry."

Clearly, Spiral is going to be the one that gets shot - his post was #666!

If I get shot in the arm, I gladly welcome the boost in the polls. If I get killed, well, I can concentrate more on schoolwork. Tongue

Do you actually support allowing one of the candidates to get killed?

I'm not as hostile to the idea as some of you are. Like Sanchez said, it adds more spice to what is already a suspenseful game. If Lumine is forced to modify his plan, I would suggest cutting the chances of getting killed to only one dice roll instead of three, or maybe some extra compensation later on in the game (like a key role in the convention) should you get killed. I would get behind those ideas if there's support for them from other players.

I mean, I just view it as very unfair. We've all clearly worked very hard to get ahead in the game, and for one of us to randomly be booted off (meaning that all of our work goes for nothing) for no good reason is kind of a turn-off.
The odds are very low. As an observer (and who knows, maybe I'll jump in again at some point if I have the time and some opening exists Tongue) I personally want to see more action and less random schedules. Plus, this is the 1970s-there were several assassinations and other calamities from 1968-1981.
