Special Event: Florida Busing Straw Poll:

A rather complicated situation has arisen in Florida, as a number of Republican officeholders have introduced a Straw Poll to be voted on the day of the primary, regarding the busing issue. Despite Governor Reubin Askew's attempts to counter this proposal and block it, the Straw Poll will be up for voting two measures concerning busing:

First Question:

Second Question:

Quote

With Florida being mostly against busing, this poses a challenge to many candidates. On one side, strongly supporting the first question and go against busing might bring excellent results in Florida, but it would kill that candidate on many liberal states and bring trouble later on. On the other side, a candidate might be punished by going too strongly for busing, or flip flopping on the issue if the press notices.

Either way, all candidates contesting Florida are invited to take a gamble on this particular issue if they feel it's worth it. Because of that, I am also leaving Governor Reubin Askew open as a special endorser, for a candidate who is able to best articulate the anti-busing position.

Can't make any promises as doing polling is annoying as hell, but I'll try!

Sam Yorty - Florida Busing Straw Poll

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Absolutely, no doubt about it. This forced busing scheme has done communities across the country no good. The civil rights people pushing busing say that they want to unite Americans and improve education, but you just look at their deeds and you know that they're achievning none of that. The children aren't any better off, education continues to suffer, and we're only pitting off white and black folks against each other by forcing integration so quickly. You can't ram down equality on people and expect that everything will go well. It's ultimately up to parents and their children to determine where they want the kids to attend school. A constitutional amendment would be a great way of handling this issue once and for all by making it clear that the federal government can't stick its nose here.

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

I strongly believe in equal opportunity for all students. Part of the problem that we have right now in addressing education is that many of our nation's school systems are deprived of resources, making it difficult to keep up with rising standards. The federal government should do much more to provide funding for education, and as President I would work to see that happen. I also believe that establishing a Department of Education would be an appropriate way to organize federal education policy. If we devote the necessary resources to education, then you will see an improved quality of education and equal opportunities for students across the board. From here on out, it's time to stop ignoring this issue.

Actually, we will have to extend this until tomorrow night (perhaps one more day if people still need time), there are some endorsement requests I have to answer to and other matters to attend.

Regarding Nixon, I am making up my mind. We could either have another player take him, or, for extra insanity, I could have him assassinated by Arthur Bremer and leave the GOP wide open for new candidates, like Vice-President Agnew and so on.

Problem solved, then! I find it really sad to see ChairmanSanchez leave as he is a very good player, but I'm happy to welcome you as Nixon. I'll PM you later to inform you of some special gameplay involving the President.

Newspaper Ad (Appearing in major FL newspapers from March 7-11)Sad

*Picture of McCarthy*

A vote for McCarthy is a vote for:

* Ending the Vietnam war in 30 days
* Strong enforcement of busing
* Strong Integration of education
* Not bowing down to the Warmonger Ed Muskie
* Not bowing down to the anti-integration Warmonger Sam Yorty
* A president with Integrity

A TV ad with a narrator saying the lines above, with the same picture, will run in FL from March 12-14.

McCarthy on Busing:

"I strongly support the practice of busing. Doing so is integral to integrating the various races of this great country in our education system. Without busing, our schools remain segregated in all but name. Busing is essential to eliminating all tension between the races of this country. Anyone who is like Sam Yorty and does not support busing has stood firmly against racial integration and is not deserving of the presidency of this country."

McCarthy on Education:

"It is essential that we do not return to a dual system of public schools. To do so would be to spit in the face of all the civil rights efforts of the last couple decades. We must teach our children to respect each other's differences, not attack each other based on them. That cannot be done in a dual system of public schools, and it is essential that we take every measure to crack down on those states, cities, and communities that still try to avoid integration of public schooling in any way, shape, or form."

Muskie New Hampshire Speech

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have been dealt a blow tonight, by the likes of none other than Sam Yorty. I would like to congratulate him on his victory, but to tell him, that our fight is not over! Until now I have run a cautious campaign. My advisers beseached me not to take any position which might be viewed as controversial, or really brave at all. No longer! I will run on my beliefs and not merely experience. I will run on my convictions, and not a poll tested message. From here on out, I will be a candidate you will be proud to vote for! Thank you, god bless the state of New Hampshire, and god bless the United States of America.”

Muskie for America Schedule

March 8th
Fundraiser in Chicago, IL
Voter registration drive in the suburbs, with Muskie attending.
Rally in Chicago, IL.
“Thank you all for coming out tonight! Together, we will show Yorty, and Lindsay, and McGovern that we are still a force to reckoned with! We were shellacked by our loss in New Hampshire, I won't deny it, but will we let Yorty and his campaign drag this party so far to the  right, that even Nixon would balk? Of course not! First in Florida, an then here in the great state of Illinois we will show everyone that we can and will win the nomination, and the Presidency! Thank you and goodnight.”

March 9th
Fundraiser in Springfield, IL.
Barnstorm in Springfield, IL.
Town hall at local UAW
“As President I will work tirelessly for the working man. Nixon has made it deadly clear with his policies, that he does not support the average American. He has cut the highest tax bracket by over 25% of it's original value, and then wishes to saddle you all with the deficit that will create. Under President Muskie, I will ensure the wealthy pay their fair share.”

March 10th
Voter registration drive in Van Buren, IL, with Muskie attending.
Barnstorm in Southern Illinois
Meeting with civic leaders in Cairo, IL.

March 11th
Fly to Miami, FL.

March 12th
Meet with civic leaders in Tallahassee, FL.
Town hall in Tallahassee, FL.
“Ladies and gentlemen, how many of you know someone wounded or killed in Vietnam? Nearly everyone in the room does. Ladies and gentlemen, that is outrageous. Too many of our bright, young men have been sent to their deaths in a war with no end in sight. Too many. And you know what? Four years ago we were promised peace with honor. Four years ago we were promised an end to the debacle in Southeast Asia, and lo and behold, American boys are still dying over there. As your President, I will immediately withdraw all American soldiers from combat rolls, and leave the fighting to the South Vietnamese. Any our boys left over the pacific, will be to ensure American workers, and the American embassy are not overrun, and not in any of these pointless offensives which the Nixon White House keeps ordering.”
Fundraiser in Tallahassee, FL.

March 13th
Barnstorm in Orlando, FL.
Barnstorm in North Western Florida.
Pre-Primary rally in Orlando, FL.
“Tomorrow is the all important Florida primary. Your great state plays a huge roll in determining our nominee for the Presidency of these United States. Thank you all so much for coming tonight, and  let's give Lindsay, and Yorty, and McGovern a shellacking tomorrow at the polls! Goodnight Orlando!”

Muskie Response to Busing Straw Poll

1. I commend Governor Askew for making the right choice on the issue of a constitutional amendment on busing. As President I will adamantly oppose any amendment to ban busing. A document graced with the Bill of Rights, and the 14th, 15th, and 16th amendments need not be reduced to simply a catch all for a portion of the population's grievances. I also stand with Congressman Lindsay, this race baiting tactic cannot be used to divide us. We, north and south, black and white, must stick together to ensure our country continues to be the greatest this world has ever seen.
2. I unequivocally stand in favor of equal education. And that, like it or not, requires busing. Not only is this the only real, if imperfect, solution to the scourge on unequal education, it is the price we all must pay for centuries of segregation, and hatred between the races. Only through busing can we have equal education, and an end to the preconceived notions about the races which make up this great nation. Thank you, and goodnight.

Muskie for America Campaign Offices

Muskie staff in New Hampshire will be transferred to our Illinois offices, and to opening a new office in Milwaukee. No new staff will be added, and the offices in New Hampshire and Iowa will be vacated.
The Wisconsin and Illinois offices will begin to register new voters, and the Florida offices will send advance men before each of Muskie's appearances.
