From The Great Falls Tribune:

State Senate President Jon Tester, a Big Sandy farmer, is traveling to Washington, D.C., next week to talk to Democratic Party officials and fund-raisers about challenging U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns in 2006.

"We'll kind of take a look around and see if this is something we want to do," he said this week.

Tester, 48, is one of several people either running or considering running for the Democratic nomination to challenge Burns, a Republican.

State Auditor and Insurance Commissioner John Morrison has said he plans to run, and two other men are thinking about it: former Missoula Mayor Dan Kemmis and Paul Richards, an editor/consultant and former state legislator who lives south of Boulder.

Tester is barred by term limits from running next year for re-election to the state Senate, where he's served since 1999. An organic grain farmer, Tester last year helped Democrats win their first majority in the state Senate in 10 years.
...
Tester said he'll also find out what commitments might have been made to Morrison or other candidates considering a run against Burns.
...
Burns, 70, is running for re-election to a fourth consecutive six-year term in the Senate. As of March 31, he had $1.5 million in his campaign account. He raised nearly $1 million the first three months of this year.

Woohoo!  So...Casey, check....Tester, check...McCaskill?  Turner?

The Dem recruiters are kicking it into high gear...we just need some top notch recruits in MO and TX and the Dems will be in good shape to build themselves into a nice majority in 2008 during the Warner landslide...

Its also nice to see the Dems paying a little more attention to recruiting vocal populists...

What are you smoking? Wink

Don't forgot the Republicans chances at picking up Washington, North Dakota, Florida, West Virginia (if Byrd calls it quits), and Minnesota.  The GOP could cancel out most of the Dem Pickups in 06...

We are too polarized for Warner to win with more than oh...55% of the vote (not a landslide IMHO).

A landslide by recent standards....I dont think I have to be smoking anything to think Dems have a good chance of picking up 2-3 seats in the senate this year...

Sure, Reps have a chance in MN...I actually don't think they're going to get their ND recruit, so I'm not that worried there and FL, while potentially vulnerable, probably leans dem.  Certainly, in a good R year, it could go the other way...but I'm hoping for a little breeze for the dems...

And if you think I'm overly optimistic, recall that in early 2000 Dems had only 44 seats in the senate and that, somehow, they rather improbably boosted that total to 50 and then, briefly, to 51...

its not absurd to hope for a gain of 3-4 seats...

Yes, yes you do since the next election is 2006.

Seriously, a Dem gain of up to 3 would not be stunning.  A Rep gain of 2-3 is not impossible either.  Still a lot of electioneering to go before we can make some real, informed decisions.
