Made a couple of modifications to PJ's (actually pretty good) draft:

Quote from: Restricted
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Article VI: Membership
a. Any person agreeing to the Party platform shall be allowed to join the Socialist Party of South America.
b. Any member who brings the Party into disrepute or who engages in anti-Party activities is liable to have their membership suspended or canceled by the National Executive.
c. Any member who runs in an election against a duly nominated candidate of the Socialist Party of South America shall be automatically expelled from the Party pending appeal to the National Executive.

Article VII: Conventions
a. A convention shall be called once per year by the General Secretary at a time of his or her choosing.
b. All members of the party shall be allowed to participate in the proceedings of the convention.
c. Convention is absolutely sovereign over all Party matters when in session.
[/quote]
I like this, though wouldn't it be easier to use the Party Leader, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary for the National Executive?

Anyway, I would like to announce the formation of a Party faction to be called Socialist Unity. We stand first and foremost for a strong Party structure.

I am pleased to join Mr. Widdershins as a member of Socialist Unity.

I support Al's amendments and the use of the Chilean flag.

I like Al's draft very much, though I do wonder if given the still quite small size of our party 5 members for the National Executive is not too much. Maybe three would suffice already, with General Secretary, Party Leader and one extra member elected by the party membership, at least for the time being. The size of the National Executive could obviously always be expanded accordingly to the growth of our party's size.

Secondly, the question of amending our party's statutes remains unsolved in this draft, at least according to my (probably insufficient) reading. The most democratic way to do this would obviously be at a convention, though I wonder if with just one convention per year, this would in reality prove to be quite inflexible and ineffective. I would prefer a solution with the National Executive resolving potential amendments, which would then become effective immediately, but be subject to vote, and possible deletion, by the party members at the beginning of the next convention. What would others think of that?

Finally, while it makes sense to refrain on voting for yet non-existent positions until after the passage of party statutes, I would still encourage the election of a "presiding official" for the party's founding convention, which I guess we could call this current thread.

Slightly under half of South American (assuming that's what we call it) citizens are MPs now, so 5 out of 10 party members being part of the National Executive seems reasonable to me.

The timetable for conventions should probably be changed to once every three months. I'd introduce an amendment, but I'm on mobile right now.

Murica is functionally the presiding official right now, so I don't see the need to hold elections for a temporary position.

The advantage also is that at an early stage of the game the party leadership does not develop into an exclusive clique.

Yeah, your points make sense, I'll be okay with five - our party will hopefully grow with time, so that matter shouldn't poise to big a problem.

I don't know if three months is not too often - Atlasia had conventions about that often and they were the most boring thing imaginable. What about six months?

Also, since everything else is pretty much non-controversial, I motion for a vote on adoption of the party statutes as of the version presented by Al. I guess we can always vote on potential amendments later (that would get done by simple majority votes I guess, since that's not specifically mentioned?), but it's good to have a foundation from which on to work.

We can just slot in something like 'amendments to the Party Constitution may only be made during Convention'  or something.

That would make sense, yeah. Since this can be viewed as a sort of founding convention, I guess it's either way if we add that before or after adoption of the statutes.

OK then if no one has anything to add, let's start the voting on the party constitution as presented by Al and PJ.

Vote Aye or Nay, 24 hours.

Aye.

I'd like to offer the following amendment, now that I'm not on mobile:

A few more ideas for platform. This is not proposed as an amendment, just offering something to think and talk about.

Aye

Cranberry, not that I disagree with any of those proposals, but some of them feel superfluous. I prefer the relatively pared back platform, although your first amendent is my favourite of the three.

We can perhaps use them in our first election manifesto? Such a document should be more detailed than a party platform.

I second the nomination of CrabCake for party leader, and nominate Cranberry for General Secretary.
