I'd be interested in doing a western Europe version. It'd seem to strike a middle ground between the US-Canada and South American proposals; the issues confronting Europe are substantially different from those affecting the US/Canada, to a degree where I doubt the game would feel like a redux of Atlasia, while the countries themselves are familiar enough (given our numbers of European players, as well as the emphasis put on European history in American schools) that there wouldn't be as steep a learning curve as there would be for South America. Additionally, Europe already has a Parliament - simply giving that Parliament more power is much more plausible and accessible than having to create and familiarize ourselves with some sort of post-apocalyptic America or federated South America. It just seems to strike the right balance between the desires for accessibility and novelty.

Since there seems to be a pretty broad consensus developing in the other thread, motion to amend by striking the text and inserting the following:

Aye.

I think, if we're doing South America, we should make every effort to make it accessible. That means no personas, no wacky governments - and a simple and well-known name.

I move to adopt rpryor's first amendment (striking Section 1(d)) by unanimous consent, and second Talleyrand's objection to his amendment to Section 3(a).

Find someone non-controversial and respectable to serve as our first President, and we should be fine.

I see no reason to have that clause at all.

Well, the Prime Minister needs to have the confidence of a majority in Parliament, right? The President can't just choose a member of a fringe party that doesn't have support as PM. We're not trying to make the President a dictator.

I'd assume in that case there'd immediately be a confidence vote, which either our fringe party PM would lose (throwing us back into elections) or they'd win (meaning they probably should be PM).

The purpose of this amendment is to make this legislation temporary - all that is necessary for setting up an elected parliament, and nothing more. The newly elected Parliament will establish a permanent role for the President (as this is a debate more appropriately held by the democratically legitimized Parliament, and not this ad-hoc one thrown together for the purposes of simply getting this game running).

One thing to note is that no one has raised any questions about Hash. No one has questioned his competence or his ability to serve as President for our first term. We've found a candidate that is capable of providing stable leadership, who has already garnered support from members of at least three parties, across the ideological spectrum. Considering that this is a temporary appointment, I don't see any reason to delay any further. Let's move this along, and let the elected representatives of the people deliberate on a more permanent selection.

Aye (in favor of striking the prohibition). This is a decision to be made by an elected government.
