This is the official thread for the Provisional Parliament. Please sign in below. The first ten posters who announce their intent to sit as an MP shall be considered members of the Provisional Parliament. If we get interest in excess of that, the Provisional Parliament may vote on an expansion of the number of MPs.

The Provisional Parliament has been seated:

Spiral
TNF
Snowguy716

ChairmanSanchez
Turkisblau
JerryArkansas

Potus2036
Leinad
Murica
Simfan34

Given that we have four more willing participants, and I would assume we probably have generated enough interest for more, I would like to make a motion that we expand the number of MPs from 10 to 20.

Assuming we reach 20 before the normal 24 hour debate time for a motion is reached, I motion that we just seat the remaining MPs and be done with it, unless any are opposed. At that point we can properly elect a Speaker and get down to the business of hammering out what this game is going to look like.

Two more and we're good to go. I will be out for most of the day, so when we reach twenty, I think you guys should go ahead and elect a Speaker who will be able to manage the floor debates as presented in the Rules of Order thread.

Nominations for the position of Speaker of the Provisional Parliament are now open. We'll have a period of 24 hours for nominations. In order to be considered a candidate, a candidate must have one nomination (it can be from himself or herself) plus a second from another MP.

I'm sitting as a Conservative MP now. New Era has been merged with the Conservatives.

Thank you for the notification.

I will open the ballot tomorrow morning before I leave for work. As it stands, only myself and Blair have qualified for the ballot for provisional Speaker.

Sorry I wasn't able to open the vote this morning guys, the hotel I'm holed up in has some pretty terrible WiFi that likes to go out for hours at a time. A vote is now open on the election of a Speaker for the Provisional Parliament. Unless any object, I motion (in the interest of time) that voting continues until we reach a majority in favor of one candidate, or if that doesn't happen within the 24 hour period allotted for the vote, at the expiration of the time period.

Assuming this forum doesn't go to sh**t entirely, I can assume JerryArkansas's seat if need be due to his resignation.

I have no objections to you taking the seat.

With a majority of the vote, I have been elected Speaker of the Provisional Parliament. I'd like to thank all of you who voted for me and thank Blair for giving me a run for my money.

I hereby call the Provisional Parliament to order.

We will now begin debating the worldbuilding proposals presented by Game Moderator Foucaulf. I will introduce the following bill for debate, which shall begin immediately and last for a period of twenty-four (24) hours, as per the rules of order -

Personally, I think that the proposal for a South American-based game, as opposed to the same old song and dance with a US-based map, is a great idea. It gives us the opportunity to try something new out, it makes more logical sense given our political inclinations as a forum, and it provides us with new challenges. I strongly support the adoption of this bill.

Yeah, I think a lot of us here are thinking that we're going to have to play as if we're all experts on South American politics, when that obviously isn't the case. If we had to make Atlasia conform to the normal avenues of United States politics, nothing close to a 'Labor Party' could ever have won the Presidency multiple times or came within a hair's breadth of nationalizing electricity production. We have about an hour and ten minutes left for discussion. Has everyone said their peace on this?

I personally think we should avoid constituencies this go around. As Talleyrand noted in the other thread, with the population of the game as is, we don't have the numbers to sustain a 20 member constituency game, nor would one ultimately be desirable, in my mind. After we have a bit of debate on this, I would like to propose an amendment striking all but Section 4 of this bill, which would be the regular way of electing the Parliament at all times.

If none are opposed to the amendment in question, I motion that debate continue without pause, with the previous amendment serving as the text of the bill.

I object to PJ's amendment.

A vote is now open on the following amendment, please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain:

Once we get done voting on this amendment, I'm going to propose an amendment that sets 21 as the number of seats for Parliament.

I figured we needed a name, and Foucaulf suggested Patagonia in #mockparliment last night, and I think it's fitting.

The name Patagonia only refers to a small part of the South American continent, so I don't think it's appropriate.

What would you suggest? I'm willing to modify the amendment, of course.
