Well when you consider his personal approval is about 25% it looks good. Tongue

For those who missed it, I liveblogged Maduro's amazing concession speech/rant/rambling speech (best thing I ever watched in my life). Basically, this is a 'temporary setback' actually very similar to a setback the beloved Libertador Bolívar suffered in the 19th century, and this is not an opposition victory but rather a temporary counter-revolutionary victory due to the economic war, parasitical bourgeoisie, neoliberalism, shadowy powers and everything. But the Bolivarian Revolution will be reborn stronger than ever. He also mentioned Brazil in 1974, the martyr Salvador Allende, Jacobo Arbenz, Guatemala, the 'absolutely perfect' electoral system, the glorious Constitution, how the electoral system is undoubtedly the most marvellous aspect of the 17 years of revolution, Bolivar, the 1819 foundation of Gran Colombia, the 2004 recall, the 2006 presidential election, asking an audience member a question about Bolívar (to no answer!) and tons of other good stuff. Concluded with a CHAVEZ QUOTE which got a standing ovation.

Haha, priceless.

South America is certainly giving me good news lately.

Does anything really define MUd as a cocnceptual entity beyond anti-Chavezism?

With this result there's a good chance now that the Venezuelan Congress will vote to pardon opposition leaders imprisoned by Maduro.

Hopefully, they would be able to do a lot more.

Are people still claiming that Venezuela isn't a democracy?

Venezuela is, still, a democracy. It is not a liberal democracy, in that individual and minority rights are not protected there. But, and this is what I always granted to Chavez, the late SOB did like to compete, even if the competition was stacked somewhat in his favour. Maduro, being slavishly dependent on the precedent of his idol, does not dare get rid of that either, at least so far. So, it still seems that power in Venezuela can change hands via elections, and that is the definition of democracy.

Are people still claiming that Venezuela isn't a democracy?

It's classified as a hybrid regime in the Democracy Index. Like in for instance Turkey, the voting process itself seems to be mostly free (no vote rigging). But democracy is about more than putting a paper in a ballot box. Independent media is supressed and the judiciary is politicized. That may change now though, with the opposition winning almost 3/5 majority.

The MUD claims it has 112 deputies. We'll have to wait for official CNE results.

Actually, they claim to have 112 "assured" and another 4 "fighting for".

Apure 1 out of 5
Aragua 8 out of 9
Barinas 5 out of 6 (!!!)
Bolivar 7 out of 8
Carabobo 8 out of 10
Cojedes 1 out of 4
Delta Amacuro 1 out of 4
Falcon 4 out of 6
Guarico 1 out of 6
Lara 6 out of 9
Merida 6 out of 6
Miranda 7 out of 12
Monagas 4 out of 6
Nueva Esparta 4 out of 5
Portuguesa 1 out of 6
Sucre 3 out of 6
Tachira 6 out of 7
Trujillo 2 out of 5
Vargas 3 out of 4
Yaracuy 2 out of 5
Zulia 13 out of 15
Natives 2 out of 3

Oficial results are posted for 165 out of 167 seats, and opposition has, I believe, 109 of them (or 110 - I am not sure about the 3rd native representative). Just short of 2/3 it seems.

PARLINVE appears to be the official MUD indegenous list, who won all three indigenous seats

So if they win the two remaining seats they'll have a two-thirds majority?

A truly heartwarming outcome! One of the most encouraging election results we've seen in a while.

seats that are still out:

Amazonas at-large District
Aragua 3rd District

The former seat is almost guaranteed to be a MUD victory, because MUD won the district's list vote by five points

MUD 112, PSUV 55

The 3 Indigenous are supported by the MUD.

The 2 deputies left have been adjudicated to the MUD, it's just that the page hasn't updated.

EDIT: Yes, in short, they have the 2/3rds.
