Thought ths would be a good thread as we could have a heck of a race here in 2006.

Independant and Socialist Candidate and US Rep running for the senate vs a GOP contender and a Dem contender.  I say Dem contender as I am about to post an article about that.  Then with Gov Douglas out, it could be interesting.

Also the House seat is now open.

A Democrat will Challenge Sanders: Evan as national Democrats
discuss the possibility of backing U.S. Representative Bernie Sanders
(I-VT) for the U.S. Senate, former state Senate President Peter
Shumlin (D-VT) announced his intention of running for the Democratic
nomination.
With Governor Jim Douglas (R-VT) disclaiming interest in the
open Senate seat, Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie (R-VT) is getting
the most Republican attention. But other Republicans are also looking
at the Congressional races. Former State House Speaker Walter Freed
(R-VT) said he was noncommittal about whether he would return to
political life. "I haven't ruled anything out so far. There's always
that political bug that nags."

Any Democrat who enters the race will cause a problem.  If they nab just 5% in a close race it could be the deciding factor.  Dean needs to do his job, get on the horn, and tell all Democrats to stay the hell away.

Peter Clavelle ('04 Challenger for Douglas) would be Bernie's biggest worry from the Dem side because of Burlington and Montpelier (both voted for Clavelle ~18% higher than state % while only ~9% higher for Bernie).  He could easily get 20%

but he's not stupid enough to run. The logical thing for him would be to go for Sanders' House seat.

She'll be a strong contender for the GOP. The best they could run.

Maj. Gen. Martha Rainville likely in House race
