Not sure why her reversal of position would make her a FF now. It took a massacre for her to switch her position away from a battle flag that flew under a vicious government and was later made famous by the Ku Klux Klan.

Sorry dude, but there wasn't really a legion of Republicans or Democrats adamantly calling for its removal before this.  People give Truman a pass for being a huge racist early in his career because he eventually did the right thing.  People give LBJ the same forgiveness for his sh*tty civil rights record as a Senator because he came around and ended up supporting and signing the CRA.  Robert Byrd - who literally was a Klansman - is more or less completely forgiven because he said sorry!!

I expect the same treatment - at least on this issue - for Haley, Graham and everyone else calling for its removal.

Everyone sane thought it was ridiculous that they still had a flag from their capital building in the 1990s, and didn't completely remove it from the grounds with their moderate hero compromise in 2000.

South Carolina has been banned from hosting NCAA tournament games for two decades because of the flag. Stop making things up.

This thread is so void of any sort of discussion that it's just depressing.

Let me undepress you then. She's been a better governor than I had feared back in 2010 when she was running for her first term as governor. Indeed, for one with her politics, she's been pretty good.  She's young enough that I could see her running for a third term in 2026 (or 2022 if a Dem wins in 2018) and compared to other potential Republicans, she'd likely be one of the better choices.

(There's no good path for her to run for another office after 2018 when she gets term limited other than possibly in a Republican cabinet.)

Would she have a shot if she tried to primary Graham in 2020?

Doubtful.  Graham's going to have a huge warchest and the space to Graham's right is likely to be taken up by someone opposed to the removal of the flag from the Confederate Soldiers monument on the grounds. Maybe if the GOP wins the White House and Graham succeeds in his campaign to be Secretary of Defense she could win the special election in 2018 for his seat if she appoints a placeholder to the seat.

Talking about politicians in the legislature, the only body that can act on this.  And way to all ignore the rest of my post.

Isn't it funny how outrage over a Governor defending a flag is stronger on here than say the increased economic inequality that has happened under Southern Governors like Nikki Haley?  Oh yeah, I will acknowledge that does get covered eventually, but those discussions for some reason don't seem to drum up the same level of universal outrage and discussion as arcane debates like whether or not it is appropriate to have a flag of a nation that has been dead for a hundred and fifty years on the front lawn or which party was more pro-civil rights in the 1960s.

And you guys wonder why most people think the US Congress is a flaming bag of dog shit now days?

I know that you really don't like the southern wing of the GOP, so why are you defending them?

In fact, the Confederate flag has been controversial for a really long time, and has made its way into big politics, including in Presidential races. It was an issue in 2000 when McCain was pinned about past statements in favor of taking it down. In 2008, Romney and McCain both said it should be taken down and were chastised by the southern nuts (as Southern-darling Huckabee, who I know you do not like and, to no one's surprise, defended the use of the flag).

A little research will show that legions of Democrats and northern Republicans have been calling for the removal of the flag from state-sponsored buildings/etc in the south for two decades. Why are you defending the likes of people who either stood against these efforts or idly by until an event which essentially forced their switch?
