People would not be asking the same question if this were say John Q Adams vs Andrew Jackson.  Sure, one was a mediocre president with corrupt buddies who supported insane tariffs which damaged the economy, but the other was literally a white supremacist with war fever who supported actions against people due to their ethnicity and race.

That could apply to either one of those scenarios.
