Similar to my late 21st century mini-timeline, in which the South and West are devastated by climate change and the Democrats are their primary advocates.  Meanwhile, the grandchildren of New England progressives deeply resent having to pay for the problem they tried to fix 100 years ago.  Like this, but with SW migrants settling in Hartford instead of Boston:

2096

The Supreme Court upholds the D.E.S.E.R.T. Act, the Flood Relief Act of 2093 and the re-established Civilian Conservation Corps in successive 8 to 7 votes during the spring of 2095, with the additional justices confirmed by the Democratic senate during the court expansion ironically holding the balance of power.  Shortly thereafter, the oldest two conservatives retire from the court, leaving little doubt that other American future programs will also be upheld.  Relief funds and public works projects flow to the Southwestern and Gulf Coast states.  Chicago and Boston become centers for AI innovation and the economy briskly recovers from the late 2080's depression and agricultural crisis, which powers Martinez to the largest popular vote win in US history:

President Isabel Martinez/Vice President Calvin Jackson 62.7%  529 EV
Sarah Fitzpatrick (CT-GOV)/Matthew X. Chen (WA-SEN) 35.4%  9 EV

1972:

Richard Nixon's campaign team releases an a fabricated audio clip in which McGovern supposedly (not actually) says D.C.'s voting rights in presidential elections should be taken away. The people of D.C., angry with McGovern, vote for Nixon instead.

When the Electoral College meets and casts their ballots, the guy tallying the votes accidentally switches the columns for Nixon and McGovern. The results become official before the mistake is realized and McGovern wins the election...

His presidency is extremely prosperous and popular, and he is eventually able to repeal the part of the 22nd Amendment that limits presidents from having more than two terms. With the help of the great health services offered to the President, McGovern is still alive today and continues to serve as the Supreme Leader of the People's Republic of America.

Democrats promise to ban the Red Sox and pass an amendment to the constituon stating that New York City is "way way cooler" than Boston. democrat candidate states in candid interview than he thinks the use of the word 'wicked' as an adverb makes "literally no sense".

Alternate 1972 election where Nixon is a Democrat and McGovern is a Republican.

Or:

William Weld picks David Duke as his running mate.
