Counties in MI just outside metro Detroit, including some fairly sizeable ones, showed a sizeable swing:

Ingham (Lansing): 37/63 to 62/38, a D+50 swing. Rural then; government and university and heavily Dem today at least at the national level.
Livingston (Howell, Brighton): 35/65 to 59/41, a D+48 swing. Very rural redneck then; today very professional and fast-growing; leans GOP now (an island of Atlas blue in a sea of Atlas red).
Washtenaw (Ann Arbor): 39/61 to 62/38, a D+46 swing. Similar to Ingham today but even more Dem.

Heavily Catholic (and Reformed in W Mich) counties showed a lesser but still substantial swing to the Dems:
Oakland (suburban Detroit): 45/54 to 61/38 (D+32)
St. Clair (Port Huron): 40/60 to 59/41 (D+38)
Kent (Grand Rapids): 39/60 to 56/43 (D+34)
Ottawa (Holland): 25/75 to 45/55 (D+40); one of 2 MI counties carried by Goldwater.

Outstate counties also showed a strong swing:
Oscoda (Mio): 28/72 to 54/46 (D+52) Very rural and poor; also recorded MI's hottest temp (112F) on July 13, 1936.

Bottom line is that MI was one of many "swing" states that was a complete disaster for Goldwater.

Interesting that the county with the strongest Dem swing (Long, GA) was in a Kennedy-Goldwater state.

I had assumed black Republicans, but census records say otherwise and the county voted for Wallace in 1968 with an outright majority. Voted for Carter (as did every GA county in '76) and Clinton twice, but has gone two-thirds Republican since 2004.

I wonder what would explain it then.
