The former British colony Barbados wants to secede from Queen Elizabeth II. In lieu of the monarch, an elected president should be the head of state of the Caribbean island, announced Prime Minister Freundel Stuart. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of independence from the UK, the parliamentary democracy is to be proclaimed in November 2016.

It is pointless to keep the Queen as head of state, when the country is otherwise completely independent, Stuart said. "It's a bit awkward to get up in 2015 and swear loyalty to Her Majesty The Queen, instead of promising Barbados loyalty, added the Prime Minister.

Is it actually that easy for Barbados to overthrow the Queen?
Or may they reckon that she will send her troops to her small island?
