Based on the way Cook County has voted, I would have to say 1924.

I can't find separate results for Chicago itself, but I'd assume you need at least a plurality in Chicago to carry Cook County even back then.

On a side note, while researching this, I found an amusing Yahoo questioner asking "would I get whacked if I voted Republican in Chicago?" He's apparently concerned "Black Panthers" might deny him the ballot. I really don't know what's wrong with these people.

Looking at historical populations, its actually could've voted for Eisenhower. Cook County voted for Ike both times, after that only Nixon has won it in 1972 with a 53-46 margin (city itself almost certainly went to McGovern).

Here's the percentage of population Chicago held of Cook County in the following years:

2010: 51.2%
1970: 61.3%
1960: 69.2%
1950: 80.3%
1940: 83.6%
1930: 84.8%
1920: 88.5%
1910: 90.9%
1900: 92.4%

Compared to today, Chicago was a lot more of Cook County's population than it is now. All we know though is that Ike won Cook with over 50% of the vote, no margin.

Possibly. I do think I know why Ike won the county. According to this October 1952 Jet edition, the town of Cicero was polling heavily for Eisenhower (64-35) in a Chicago Sun despite Truman winning by 4,000 in 1948. The magazine speculates Stevenson's choice to send the National Guard after the 1951 race riot lead to resentment from the areas voters.

Chicago went to Eisenhower by about a two point margin in 1956.  (btw Stevenson won it by about nine points in 1952).

Election Day footage from 1960, plus the results of both elections b/congressional district (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/tL4ARAs9Z-UBIZ8cgMKK-mw/htmlview?pli=1)

The boundaries of the CDs and Chicago matched up perfectly, I believe.

Sure.  Btw, if you are interested about how it went in 1960, returns showed Kennedy winning Chicago 2-1 (lol 35% Democratic swing).

What's the percentage if you restrict it to voters who were alive at the time? Tongue

Chesterton spoke of a "democracy of the dead" but I don't think that's what he had in mind.

A little ironic that the last Democrat to lose Chicago was from Illinois.
